Don't be put off.....

First appearances are deceptive, this hotel is down a narrow, authentic, residential backstreet complete with associated sights and smells. Located in a Hutong (back street) the location is fantastic! Rooms are more like rustic inn type, clean with comfortable beds, plumbing and showers are good. Breakfast is basic, coffee, toast, choice of cooked eggs plus various Chinese veg options... Restaurant not used for evening meals as it was too easy to walk to nearby food places. Beer in hotel @ 16RMB / 330ml. Shop around corner = 10RMB / 600ml. Must try Little Yunan for real Chinese food, and Peking Duck by Beihai Lake, on the left (west) side of lake just beyond Sex and the City Club. Again appearances are deceptive... descend into basement banquet hall for fantastic food and live Chinese entertainment. All for about 150RMB pp. 280RMB Great Wall tour = good value. Be prepared for 1.5hr bus and a long walk with steep climbs. Son and I got to Tower 23 (end of line) and back in 1.5 hrs up and 45 mins down - took cable car up and down. Transfer to airport took 40mins into city and 50mins out, cost 80RMB each way. Enjoy

Beautiful Oasis

I have visited this wonderful hotel and it is truly a hidden gem. The layout of the hotel allows you to imagine what a traditional Chinese house might have looked like back in the day. The location of the hotel puts you very close to the forbidden city and the Jingshan garden (a block away). Even though the location is perfect, the fact that is is located in a huton might be a little intimidating since you will be walking in smaller streets to actually get there but once inside! it is truly an oasis to enjoy. The staff is so helpful and my 4 days stay was magnificent. Truly recommend this hotel :)

Not 4 Star!!

Baffled how this gets a 4 star rating? More like a 2 star. Didn't feel safe arriving down dim small street, carrying suitcase ( taxi can not fit down the street) first introduction was a rat running across the road! Reception tiny, but staff nice. Rooms very basic but clean, no bar, no refreshments, no room service. If I had booked a 2 star hotel then maybe I would of been happy but I was expecting a 4 star! Would not stay again I like a bit more luxury, expensive for what you get.

First Floor Rooms Smell Gross

This hotel has a ton of potential - great location, authentic Beijing feel. However most of the rooms on the first floor (there are only two floors and most rooms are on the first floor) have a garbage/sewer/dead animal smell that would not go away. Initially, when we asked to have some rooms changed, they said they were full, which they clearly were not. Eventually the rooms were switched but it would not be worth the risk to stay there again. Staff were also unhelpful, not able to give much information, and check in took a long time for no reason. The manager was very over eager and kept getting in his employees' way. He also kept trying to come in our rooms without explanation. Would not stay in this hotel again!

Not a suitable location for fo....

The hotel in itself is a worthy place, with all the traditional and authentic ambiance and architecture. It feels so ancient but the modern amenities gives a different feel. Service and amenities are good. Staff are accommodating even with their difficulty in communicating in English, they were helpful in giving directions to us. However, the downside of this is their location. It is located in the residential area, in the far end of a dark alley where dumpsters are on the sides which made it so smelly as we walked. We arrived almost midnight and the taxi driver just dropped us off on the side of the street and left us with us not knowing where to go. Since it was a residential area, we were kinda worried if we were in a wrong place. We felt unsafe walking toward the alley as there were no clear sight of any hotel. We came knocking at every possible hotel door taking our chances that it was the Jingshan Hotel and it took us about 15 minutes to finally found the place. The door was locked and the receptionist was already asleep so we waited long to get in. Our room was spacious with nice well-lighted bathroom. Toiletries are complete and were replenished daily. However, the smell of the sewer reeks in our bathroom so we have to close the door and spray some perfume to eliminate the smelly odor. They tried to provide good service and amenities are complete. The heater is in good condition which kept us comfortably warm inside. The breakfast selection though limited were all tasty. The chef was kind enough to make us omelette of our choice and provide us another helping of coffee and water. This hotel is like an ancestral house converted into bed & breakfast hotel with some improvements made. Nonetheless, it was still not a suitable location for a hotel. It is not recommended to foreign tourist to stay in. There are better hotels with the same price which are in a more safe and convenient location.
