A historic hotel in a prime lo....

We recently returned from a three week visit to Italy and spent our last two nights in Rome at this property. Interestingly, we were initially hesitant to stay here given the number of unfavorable reviews we read on Trip Advisor but decided to give it a try. We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel and wished we had stayed longer than only two nights. First, it is in a stellar location on Via del Corso, close to the Tiber river, Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navonna. Secondly, the hotel itself is a classic historic property having been built in the 1880's with soaring columns, marble and dark wood everywhere. It reminded us very much of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. Third, our Deluxe level room and marble bathroom was enormous with soaring 15 foot high ceilings. Nice touches included a heated towel rack in the bathroom and doors which separated the bedroom from the entryway. Very old world. Additionally all of the staff we dealt with from the Check In, to Housekeeping, the Bell staff, and Concierge were both pleasant and helpful. The only reason I'm giving this a hotel a four star and not a five star rating is the food was disappointing. We had breakfast one morning and really just did not care for it all. I'm hoping the Management reads this review and makes improvements in the Food & Beverage because this could be one of Rome's finest hotels with just a few minor changes. We'll be back to Rome in a couple of years and are planning to stay at this hotel again.

Lovely historic hotel with lot....

This hotel was our last stop on our two week Italy trip and two nights were included with the tour we took. We wanted to stay one additional night and had booked that separately. The hotel was very accommodating and allowed us to keep the same room, at the price we'd booked at, even though the room we got was much nicer. Very nice and helpful staff for EVERYTHING we needed. We were there to watch the Giro d"Italia (bike race) and the hotel was a perfect spot for viewing the race. The hotel itself is so historic and full of charm, especially the large sitting area downstairs, the breakfast ballroom and I can't say enough about the lovely marble staircase adorned at the bottom with the huge lion, the hotel's symbol. Our room was lovely as well, beautiful light fixtures, high ceilings, ornate radiators and lovely wooden doors. The linens were very comfortable and we enjoyed every minute of our stay there.

Perfect Hotel for Spyns Giro d....

I've just returned from a splendid weekend at Spyns Tours Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) bike race which finished in Rome May 2018. I booked this hotel because it was located on the finish racecourse. Starting with the positives, the hotel's location couldn't be better. It's within walking distance of the Spanish steps (5 mins) and Trevi Fountain (10 mins). The Spyns Giro Tour group had rooms overlooking the racecourse and we booked two rooms with balconies overlooking the race for our traditional Spyns Giro race finish party last Sunday. The hotel is very grand, with lots of gold leaf, chandeliers, and dark wood. The 2-ton marble lion at the foot of the grand staircase is worthy of a visit. Breakfast was excellent. And the rooms were large, bright, and had air conditioning that pleased most of our American clients (who like to sleep in meat lockers). Anna the concierge was excellent and highly efficient in dealing with my many requests and a porter named Andrei (spelling?) who was on room service duty last Sunday did an excellent job with constantly delivering ice. The front-desk staff were capable but somewhat erratic with their service. Perhaps this is cultural as Romans tend to do everything with passion, including check in! Reception is a half-moon shaped desk so I think it's more that guests don't know where to go. Management could easily fix this but putting velvet ropes in front of the reception desk so guests can line up properly. Just a suggestion. On the whole, our group reservation, check in, and stay went well. This hotel is classified as five-star, but the rooms and décor are showing a bit of wear and tear. The lobby furniture looked and smelled like it's been there since the 1930s. I've seen this kind of grand old dame effect with family-owned hotels in Paris. The hotel and rooms are probably overdue for a renovation, but I actually found the "gilded age" style charming and chic. So in closing, this was an excellent choice for Spyns Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) finish tour. While the hotel and rooms are looking a bit tired, the location, service, and rooms were perfect for the Spyns Giro group. We will return!

A Dream from a Visconti Movie

Always wanted to stay here. Treated myself this visit to Rome. A thrilling stay. Simply gorgeous, exquisite, words fail. Plus its location could not be better. Concierge recommended my new favorite restaurant in Rome. Read negative reviews with care. You will love this fine hotel!

Gorgeous hotel; old world styl....

I'm puzzled by some of the negative reviews of this hotel. (If you have a cleanliness issue in your room, make it known immediately and switch rooms.) Grand Hotel Plaza is one of my absolute favorite hotels ever. I've stayed here three times over the past few years, and every time I'm blown away by how gorgeous its interior is, and how much of its historical charm it's managed to preserve. If you like new, modern hotels, then perhaps Grand Hotel Plaza isn't to your taste, but if you love old buildings with a story, then read on. To begin with, a quick aside: there are definitely different types of rooms in this hotel. I've stayed in a tiny room with a window out over the huge, charming central garden, and I've stayed in a gorgeous large room, with a window over this same garde garden. Both of these rooms were comfy, had lovely large doors, interesting ceiling details, marble bathrooms, and old window panes (something I love). They were both quite clean. Of course, I loved the grander room, with its 4-post bed and several rows of windows, but the smaller room was charming and comfy too. This is something to figure out when booking the room. (I can't give too many other details about selecting rooms, because we were traveling with Italian friends each time we visited, and they booked for us.) If you can splurge for a nicer room, however, I would go for it! But I wouldn't hesitate to stay here if a smaller room is in your budget. It's still a lovely experience. The breakfast here is delicious. There is no omelette or waffle stand, but the coffee is top-notch, there are delicious pastries, and tasty savory and sweet options. The setting is grand. I personally find it extremely satisfying. The hotel is super centrally located, a short walk from many neat sites and great restaurants and cafés for an afternoon aperitivo. (I'll throw in two recommendations in walking distance: Osteria Siciliana for Sicilian food and Musée Atelier Canova Tadolin for delicious Roman food in a super neat ambiance). You are also, of course, super close to some excellent shopping spots: Falconeri and Luisa da Espagnola on the higher end, Geox in the middle, and H&M on the lower end. To me, the old-world charm of the rooms and of the lobby, large central room, and breakfast room are unbeatable. This is the type of hotel I want to stay in when I visit a charming, pedestrian-friendly spot like downtown Rome.
