Very uneven property

This hotel consists of two buildings on opposite sides of a busy street. One building is rated 4 stars, it has the reception desk, the local information, the waiting area with comfortable seating, the breakfast room, the bar, the patio, the staff. I have not seen the rooms, only one person from our group was there, she had a single that was small and unpleasant, she said. But that building has recently been renovated so the larger rooms might be fine. The other building has none of those amenities and is rated 3 stars, though many of the rooms don’t merit one. Look up Hotel Ratings on Wikipedia and scroll down to European Hotelstars Union, which rates hotels in Austria and other countries. I think they either have not inspected the Neutor or they were shown selected rooms. The article describes the difference between, for example, 2 and 3 stars, which doesn’t speak to the size of the rooms, the quality of the furnishings, the convenience or modernity of the bathrooms, or other issues which affect one’s satisfaction. I had a single room in the 3 star building which was like an old dorm room. It was quite hot in late May, there was no a/c in any of the rooms, and though I asked for a fan on night one, it arrived only on day 3 after I asked again. The street noise was loud so I / we had to choose between traffic noise with the window open, and a hot stuffy room with it closed. There were a few in my building who were happy with their rooms, notably a pair of women who shared a room on the top floor, with the terrace. We were part of a choir group on tour and many complained to the tour company about the low quality of this hotel. A few unfortunates had major construction right outside their window that started before 7am each day. The location was great, WiFi was decent, the breakfast was good, and the desk people were efficient. But I hated my room and having to cross the street for even a coffee (no in-room kettle or minibar) in the morning, and it was so small and spare it was hard to feel relaxed.

Not bad

We stayed 2 nights, first day we had problem, their door scaner did not work for some times then they resolved it. We stayed at the door. The room was clean, there is free internet. Not far from the center.

Avoid unless you enjoy accommo....

We were given two rooms across the road from the building that houses the reception. The rooms were old and grubby. The one room was only slightly bigger than a large corridor with beds crammed in end to end. There were no curtains up at the window. Booked this hotel on the basis of the photos of the rooms which I now believe only represented a few renovated rooms in the other building. The management were not at all bothered about our issues with the rooms. We don't have inflated views about what you should get for your money but ended up moving to another 3* hotel which was so much better. The rooms are very basic and not clean.

Genuinely Terrible

If you’re confused by the divergence of views on this hotel in recent reviews, what you have to understand is that there are two separate parts to it, split across buildings and divided by a busy main road into Salzburg. The “reception half” seems to have been recently renovated and these are the photos you’ll find on the website. The “other half” needs to be condemned and the building torn down. I stayed in that part and so can’t pass comment on what the renovated section is like. Even in my student days I’ve never stayed in as shabby, unpleasant, run down conditions as in the Hotel Neutor. There are multi-coloured stains literally all over the carpets in the rooms and hallways. Fixtures are falling off; the furniture hasn’t been replaced I’m guessing in 60 years. The walls are dented, paint is peeling off, and there’s a bad smell in the entrance lobby. The bedding and towels are clean and new but that does little to take away from the expectation that you’ll wake up to find insects and rodents sharing your room. The concept that any rating system could just this “4 star” is beyond laughable. It is a 1 star. The breakfast area is refurbished and is in the reception part of the hotel. It is basic, but fresh and pleasant. It gives the appearance of a 2-3 star modern hotel: like an IBIS. Breakfast is standard, good quality Austrian continental buffet style. There is free, good Wi-fi (9 Mpbs). Things that will not improve even if you are in a renovated room is the lack of air conditioning (Salzburg gets surprisingly hot/humid) and the noise from the road, if you open a window. The service from staff is also surly and verging on rude. The only positive about the hotel is the proximity to the old town: in 3 minutes you can walk a tunnel and you’re in the Old Town. SUMMARY: you have been warned.

So much better than we expecte....

We were booked into Hotel Am Mirabellplatz until the day before our trip - they cancelled at short notice and put us in Hotel Neutor instead - and I am so glad they did! The staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful - going over and above when I fell ill, and sorting things relating to Mirabelplatz hotel to make life easy. The room was quiet and clean, the food delicious. The location was ideal. I would particularly like to thank Carmen for her help. I would highly recommend it - difficult to understand why it has previously received some bad reviews.
