Cozy but cold!
Arrived around christmas. Our initial room was very cold so we changed and the new one was ok. The room was decent, nothing special but clean. Great breakfast, sparkling wine was a nice touch:). The neighbourhood was calm, you will find everything on Schönhauser allee which is 10 min away.
I believe this pension is at its best during the summer.

Good Value no frills hotel
This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel. It is small, with no special features but great value if you don't need luxuries. There is no lift so if you are unlucky enough to have a room on a higher floor, there can be a few flights of stairs to climb. No problem if you only have hand luggage, but a large suitcase might be tricky. The breakfast is really good, with different choices each day. Very good, plentiful coffee. On this trip, I think that the room had just had a refurb and it seemed that the entire hotel might be in the process (there was a bit of work going on). It is very clean with comfortable beds. We have recommended it to friends who also find it perfect for their needs.

Post cycling tourism in Berlin....
The only good thing about the hotel is it's location, there are train and busses stations very close to it. Otherwise, I didn't enjoy my visit at all.
First of all, there was no elevator, and my room was on the 3rd floor, I had to climb with my large suitcase. Second of all, they don't have any kind of storage facility, so I had to store my bike bag in the kitchen. Third of all, during check out, I was told there isn't an option for credit card (To bed honest, I didn't check, and I didn't look for signs), but in this day and age, what establishment doesn't offer credit card payment?
Above all that, very over priced considering everything.

Not easy to find despite sign over street address. Access (unsigned) is through an archway, then a courtyard before the hotel sign for reception is visible. Confusion over breakfast times - receptionist told me "from 6.00 am.": on arriving for breakfast at 6.30, was told "not until 7.00 o'clock".

If your ideal accommodation is fancy and centrally located, the Bornholmer Hof at Prenzlauer Berg in the former East section of Berlin is not for you. However, if you require an inexpensive, clean and quiet room and you're willing to hop on and off public transport, this is a decent option.
My room was in good shape and quiet with my window facing the second Hof, an inner courtyard with trees and chirping birds. You could almost forget you're in Berlin.
Breakfast offers a solid assortment of cold cuts and cheeses, yoghurt, fruit, cereal, juices, breads, etc. You'll be able to start your day well.
What I didn't care for: The exterior on Bornholmer Street looks rough. Buildings are covered in graffiti and as a single female traveler, I was a bit nervous at first. The hotel only takes cash and there is no elevator. I was on the fifth floor and don't mind the stairs, but less nimble travelers may suffer. Overall, the Bornholmer Hof served my purpose.
