Exceeded Expectations

I booked a late holiday through Thomas Cook, which meant my flight departure time was less than 12 hours from when I booked the package. There was just the one hotel option: Teide Mar in Puerto de la Cruz, a part of Tenerife I had only visited as a child many years ago as all my stays had been in the south of the island. I saw recent reviews had been quite mixed so I went ahead with my booking with an open mind, as I needed a much needed break in the sun. The hotel is about 1.25 hours from Tenerife South airport. I was the only person on the transfer bus who was staying at the hotel. Upon arrival I received a really nice welcome from the chap on reception and I was pleased he had details of my booking despite the short notice. I didn't have a paper copy of my booking voucher to give to him, but this wasn't an issue and he just asked me to forward my email confirmation to the hotel's email address when I was settled. However, I forwarded it straightaway and he confirmed later when I saw him he had received it. I was in a studio on the third floor, facing out over the road. It's basic but very clean accommodation. There is a small 2 ring stove and kettle, with crockery etc. provided. However, as I was staying half board I had no intention of using it. The wardrobe does have old sliding doors, but these didn't pose any problem for me, unlike for some reviewers. However, the door to the balcony was a bit more tricky to slide and had a bit of a gap to it at the bottom. The lock mechanism was an old fashioned door chain. Notwithstanding this, even though I was staying here as a sole female traveller I felt safe. The bed was extremely comfortable and the noise from the traffic outside didn't bother me. The bathroom was clean. The shower was over a bathtub. It took me a while to get the mix of water right - made a lot easier when I realised the taps were marked the wrong way! I had breakfast and dinner included. Breakfast is your typical buffet affair with a hot and cold selection, including bacon, sausages, eggs, beans, meats, cheese, a variety of bread, fruit and salad. There is a selection of tea, coffee and juices. The evening buffet usually had a selection of meat dishes, fish, pasta, veg and salad. This was fairly basic food but certainly edible. I did consider having a couple of meals at nearby restaurants but decided to eat in the hotel. If you don't have lunch included in your deal you can purchase sandwiches and burgers at the pool bar. I had a cheese and ham toastie and it was just €1.80. Burgers ranged from €2.50. Moving onto drinks, this hotel has an extensive selection. A large (0.4l) beer (Dorada) is €2.20. A glass of wine is just €1.20 and you can get a bottle for only €4.80. Yes, cheap, but certainly palatable. Spirits are around €5.00 but they are BIG measures. The hotel pool is a good size and ranges from 1 metre to 2 metres in depth. The pool is surrounded by grass and trees. There were plenty of sunbeds, most of which had a topper for comfort. On each occasion I went to the pool I got a sunbed - there are signs up that make it clear you can't reserve them. All the staff here were lovely, friendly and helpful, whether that be at reception, the pool bar or in the restaurant. Overall, the Teide Mar is perhaps not the typical hotel I would book nowadays but I really enjoyed my stay and would happily come back. Despite having to pay a single supplement through Thomas Cook I still felt it was good value for money and it truly exceeded my expectations.

3 day break

Just come back from 3 day break. Apartments veey clean. Staff lovely and helpful. Never had evening meal there but breakfast was nice. The plates were very hot and food was steaming. Very peaceful round pool and aimed for the older end . We are 50 but felt comfortable. At the tine we were stopping there were a lot of germans but they were friendly. Would go back.

Very average

It was clean and the staff were very helpful and efficient. The room had had a lick of white paint and the furniture was in good condition, but the bathroom was ready for a complete refurbishment, the kitchen needed a new cooker, and a couple of pictures on the walls would have helped it to feel a bit less like a white prison cell. The wardrobes had very old sliding doors as had the door to the balcony, which needed some strength to get them open. Our room faced north so got no sun, and was just above the street which was very noisy at times. We didn't eat here or use the pool so I can't comment on either. The hotel allows guests to bring dogs which weren't particularly a problem to us, but if you have a phobia, allergy, or just don't want dogs in your hotel, then it could be an unexpected problem. The supermarket is very handy, as are plenty of decent places to eat, and it's on the hill above the main town so it's steep walk back up to the hotel or a taxi. My opinion - If you just need somewhere to sleep it's fine. If you want somewhere special then look elsewhere.

Self Catering at the Teide Mar

The Teide Mar is a no frills self catering studio apartment. We booked a studio overlooking the swimming pool as we has already read reviews saying that apartments at the front overlook the road and can be quite noisy. The studio was spotlessly clean. The kitchen equipment is very basic. There is no WiFi in the rooms although it is in the reception area. There is a deposit payable for the television remote but there are no television channels in English apart from Sky News but we couldn't get any sound.

Clean Apartments and Good Loca....

Gladly this is our last full day at these apartments. Every morning we have been woken up by the incessant noise of hammering on the walls of the building. If we had been warned about the noise we would have accepted it, an apology would have been nice.....we understand repairs need to be done at some point. Also woken by the bins at the side of our apartment being emptied and a man hammering in a building again at the side of the apartment. The room itself is clean and the kitchen area is equipped with all the necessary equipment. Beds are really comfortable. Bathroom good with plenty hot water. On arrival we noticed that the balcony door wouldn't close, reported it to reception staff who dealt with this immediately, although it is still a struggle to close. All staff are very friendly and welcoming. Good location, close to restaurants, shops and places of interest. Would have given the apartments three stars but for being woken each morning and having to listen to the hammering throughout the day.
