Great location, but beware the....
Reasonably happy with out stay at Hotel Castello. The decor is dated to the point of quirkiness (e.g. material wall paper) but our room was clean. No cooling due to local laws and it was warm. Had to unplug the fridge to use a power point. Bed was comfortable but it was pushed up against the wall (double). No elevator, but staff helped us carry our bags up. Staff were very friendly and helpful, provided a lot of detail in where was nice to visit and how to get there. The shower was terrible - alternated between appropriately hot, scalding and blastingly cold, but it was a big shower so there was adequate space to move and dodge the very hot and very cold bits. Breakfast was terrible, but included in the price. Could not fault the location. Would stay again despite the shower and poor breakfast.

Perfect location for main site....
Booked a weekend break on a budget and was so glad I got this hotel. If you need to hit the ground running due to time constraints, this location is a great base. Have read reviews saying it's awful, each to their own but what I thought was, it's clean, warm, great free WiFi and a damn good breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of plug sockets (though I was in a single room and did bring my own multisocket plug just in case) shower big and clean. Yes it's chintzy but you're in Venice! If you want minimal lines, go to IKEA. Fabric wallpaper, heavy curtains, very 'old Venezia'. A bit of a musty smell on entry but again, you get that all over Venice. The only wee gripe I had was that the floor did lean a bit, as did the bed, I kind of had to prop myself up with a cushion to feel supported. There's subsidence everywhere. I'd stay again if I was to return. If you want 5 star luxury you'll certainly pay for it in Venice (musty smell is free) but for a base to roam the alleys and sites, it is excellent. Oh, also, hairdryer in bathroom which was a bonus. Bag storage for your convenience. The tv had loads of channels (none English but hey). Overall I had a pleasant stay with Hotel Castello.

Worst breakfast in Italy
We came to stay for three nights because it's centrally located (on reflection everywhere in Venice centrally located). Room 103 was very small and located in a different building to the "main" hotel, si when it's raining you will get very wet to have a breakfast. The breakfast room had a limited number of tables so there was always a que to get one. In Italian; questo è il peggiore ed economico formaggio e salame che è possibile acquistare.
Of all the salami, qured hams and parmahams, and magnificent cheeses available, they have used the cheapest processed rubish they could find. Disgusting. The waitress with huge made up hair did not add anything to the hygiene... should really tie her hair. I will come to Venice again and again, but NEVER to this so called hotel. They are cowboys pretending to be caterers.

The hotel is tucked around a corner and easy to miss. Once you get used to the area it is in a fantastic location for Saint Marks Square, Rialto Bridge and San Zaccaria and the waterfront. We were in room 127 which was up 5 flights of stairs, no lift. The room was clean and adequate for 3 nights. Only two electric sockets, one of which was used for the fridge, so we unplugged it to charge our phones. The other one in the bathroom! The bathroom had a funny small tub in it. You had to clamber into it, sit down and then use the shower device. Not the best. The room had a strange drain smell to it. Staff ok. Breakfast adequate.

Hotel was clean, breakfast was poor, walls are very thin could hear conversation going on in next room. Staff was ok and friendly, no facilities in room to make a drink, only good thing was the location.
