Back to basics
We booked ourselves at the Starway after reading it's reviews and primarily because it was great value for money to be so near the Bund, Shanghai's tourist hub and, sometimes trap. It's an oldish building hidden behind other buildings and quite a challenge to find. There is no bell service and you'll have to cart your luggage through the lobby of an office building through the new wing of the Starway and into the main hotel lobby. The rooms are basic and though clean, feel dirty. The toilets are aged and housekeeping has to work hard to create some semblance of cleanliness. They don't have a restaurant or room service but there is a decent choice of eating places in the area. It's walking distance to the Bund and a metro station and it's easy to get taxis in the area. It's got a kind of seedy vibe, with calling cards of escort services being shoved under your door every evening, but we saw families staying here. Not much to say really. You're not going to get a room with a view but you will get a decent bed to sleep in that will not burn a hole in your pocket.

Ok hotel, but not near the cit....
The room I got is rather small. I book for a room window window, but to my horror the window looks out to no where! The staffs at the front desk is quite helpful. They also help you to organize a tour to the city or nearby cities if you need.

Good value & comfortable. Went....
Good and friendly staffs. Good for value as facility is good and clean. There is Free internet with cable provided in the room and breakfast is included. It is not perfect but I find this hotel the best if you are a traveller with medium range budget.
Rooms without window are over utilized, a little run down and small. There is also a little smell. I requested to switch to a room with window and all was great.

Do not go there
The hotel looks very nice on the website, but it looks quite different, when you see it in reality - the different is quite stunning.
We were in a room that had no window which gave quite a claustrophobic feeling. On the third morning (we had booked nine nights) a staff member came and told us we had to pay for one breakfast even though we were two people who had booked for rooms with breakfast. Breakfast was charged with 38 Y for the following days. Discussion with the hotel manager did not help. He said we had received a discount rate and there the breakfast was only included for one person.
The housekeeping seemed only to make the bed whithout changing the sheets, nor did they vaccum clean or clean in the bath room (for 10 days!).
The hotel seems to cooperate with taxi drivers which charge too much. The bell boys seem to be friends with them and want to you to take them. We first took another one and wanted the bell boy to help explain something to the taxi driver. Neither he or the people at the reception wanted to help. Instead they wanted us to take another taxi driver and highly discouraged us to take "ours". Nevertheless we took "our choice" and were happy with it. The taxi driver charged a very honest price.
The next day we took a taxi that was recommended by the hotel and we were charged double (40 Y, and later we saw that on the receipt it was written 20Y...).
The location is about a 20 minutes walk away from the subway station. It is in the business are so if the purpose of your trip is not business I recommend to live in another region.

My friend and I just came back from a trip to Beijing and Shanghai. We originally were booked for the Gaun Dong Hotel in Shanghai that someone we know in China suggested however, the services at that hotel were horrible so we decided to take our chances and look for another hotel to stay at for the remainder of our trip. We stumbled on The H Hotel on the web and were excited about the themed rooms that they offered. We ended up getting a cheap rate which was about $80 a night for the Hello Kitty themed room which we really got a kick out of. The Hotel staff was very helpful and attentive and our room was very cute, clean, and quiet. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and I would recommend the hotel to other young travelers who can appreciate the themed rooms and cool decor of the hotel. The only things that I would complain about is that room service never seemed to be working and that the hotel lobby and hallways smelled like cigarettes. I guess considering that everyone smokes in China it's to be expected but it would be nice if they could control who smokes outside of the rooms so as not to bother those who are non smokers.
FYI there is a great spa on the corner where the hotel is located. One of the staff members literally walked us to the spa and came in to translate because we wanted to find out about the spa's services. It was an awesome way to relax after sightseeing.
