Great Place to Stay in Shangha....

I spent the night of May 29, 2018 at the Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin Hotel. I found the hotel to be impressive for China: clean, luxurious & well appointed (soaker bathtub & small separate rain shower). A unique design — with rooms in the main building situated around a central multi-level atrium, or rooms in separate buildings on the finely manicured property — it felt like one was staying in a prestigious Chinese hotel. Staff were very courteous and efficient. I was in room 8615 in the main building, featuring a king size bed, medium sized bathroom & small desk. All towels, linens & pillows were of good quality. I found my room to be very quiet & comfortable. My room rate included the somewhat limited breakfast buffet in their French restaurant. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about the Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin Hotel. I give it a score of 5 out of 5. I highly recommend the Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin Hotel if you are in Shanghai and looking to stay in a nice hotel that will be comfortable for Westerners.

A beautiful, calm oasis in the....

This is easily one of the most beautiful Intercontinental hotels I have stayed in. One cannot make out how gigantic it is from outside. We stayed in the club rooms and the club rooms are ginormous! Beautiful bathrooms and a great club lounge with delicious, distinctive food. The lounge staff are very, very attentive. The only issue one may have is the support staff at night are not fluent in English. We took the Shanghai subway/ metro and the nearest metro station, West Shangxi Road is just 500 mts away. I don't think we will ever stay anywhere else when we visit Shanghai again.

Better Hotels in Shanghai

We stayed for three nights. Being a Spire Ambassador I was offered an upgrade to a club room, but would have to pay for the club access. We decided to add the club access to the room. We left the main building, which was bright and beautiful, and headed to the antiquated club building. Our room was dated, dark, and had a weird vibe. I felt claustrophobic in it. We ate breakfast two times in the main building just to be around some light, or else we took advantage of the club access we had to pay for. The problems arose during the second night of happy hour, when we were told they were out of vodka after two drinks but the vodka would be “taken out of the safe” soon. Now, we had enjoyed some vodka sodas the night before, as did other guests, so running out of a staple alcohol is rather odd. We waited for 20 minutes, then were rudely told no more vodka. We pointed to the bar where we could see bottles of vodka and asked for a drink with that kind, but were told that we would have to pay for it. It is their fault they do not have alcohol on hand for happy hour, and yet won’t rectify the situation when available. Besides this happy hour snafu, we weren’t impressed with this hotel. Greetings when we walked in the building were hit or miss, and it was hard getting a coffee or even a water at breakfast. It was just unfriendly. I did not feel like a Spire Ambassador while staying here. We felt unappreciated. We would not stay here again.

Thumbs up to Concierge!

If I visit Intercontinental Ruijin in the future, it’s absolutely due to Concierge service, not the others. I still can’t forget that morning. I went to gym located another building early in the morning and it was starting to drizzle when I finished exercise. Main building was not far away from gym so I decided to walk back to the room in the rain. Maybe 1 minute later after I started to walk? at that moment, I saw one concierge staff was starting to run to me furling umbrella with worried look on his face whether he got caught in the rain or not around 6-7 meters away from main building. I can say their concierge team was the only one delivered hospitality with warm welcome, fond farewell, service beyond expectation and anticipation of guest need during our stay. It was impressing that they always keep their eye on guests and surroundings. Most of hospitality service things are not really surprising to me as a hotelier but this was absolutely admirable. Thumbs up!

I would give it 2 stars except....

Probably my worst IC experience (I am a Spire Elite member). Stayed at this hotel for the first time and wow what a property. As a history lover this by far was one of the coolest hotels I have stayed at. I can't believe this historic property is a hotel. Huge beautiful grounds like an island in a sea of hustle and bustle. Awesome! That is where the good ends. The service, substandard is putting it nicely. It was so bad, on so many levels that it has to be a reflection on management. One noteworthy issue was the fact that they upgraded me to the "Club" level, which at this hotel is a separate building far enough away from the main building that they often golf cart people back and forth (even though the walk is really pretty). OK thank you for the upgrade but when I went in to the club lounge for coffee the first morning I was told that breakfast was not included and they would have to charge me. Wait....I thought one of the perks of the club level is the club lounge. Sure enough in the evening I went in for a glass of wine, same thing. I called IHG and asked them. They apologized and emailed the GM and asked him/her to fix this and to reach out to me. There was no contact from the GM. This same frustrating dance happened every day and eve for the trip "I will have to charge you for that toast". It really made me feel like I did not belong in the building even though this was the only service without getting the golf cart to bring me to the main building. I don't know if this was an IHG thing or just this hotel. I am thinking with the other almost laughable lack of service standards for an IC this was something that may be this hotel. Summary, fantastic property, great location, cool history, worst service to the point of tarnishing the IC image. Shame on management to ruin such a nice property with crappy service and lack of appreciation for loyal brand customers.
