Centrally located hotel in BA
Hotel is very well located on the main avenue near the playa del mayo and the obelisk. Reception not very impressive. Brush up you Spanish, limited English is spoken.
Room is stuffy and dark, there is a window but you can shake hands with the neighbors. The bed is good and clean. The other part of the room was far from clean. It has been a while that the room has seen a vacuum cleaner. It took some time to remove the cobwebs!. There is a tv and a safety deposit box.
The bathroom is outdated. You will find a hairdryer! Shower head hardly gives enough water to have a comfortable shower.
The breakfast is on the 7th floor in a canteen styled room. Basic food with good croissants. The other food is not very impressive. Staff is ignorant in cleaning up.
In short : great location, you have to take the disadvantages for granted. Score : light 3

Standard 3-star room with very....
This hotel was nothing particularly special, but the people running it were very helpful and nice, which made our stay enjoyable enough for the three days spend in Buenos Aires. The lift of the hotel was a bit slow and questionable and the room did little to block out noise from outside, but it was situated perfectly in the city for visiting shops for food, shopping, attractions, and groceries. A few more touch ups and this place would be much more popular.

Ok, it's a budget hotel...knowing that going in you certainly can't expect the George V. Tiny, kinda grubby "lobby" that basically consists of a vinyl sofa, front desk, and an elevator door...not a great first impression. By the time the glacially slow elevator takes you to your floor you're not expecting much...then you step into your room and exclaim, "hey, not bad". Clean, spacious, and recently redone. Beds, comfy, water pressure, decent...ok by me! Extra touches include a lovely art deco stairway and a pleasant breakfast room with nice stained glass windows...and a better-than-average Porteno style breakfast.
To me, the best advantage of this old dowager is its location...right in the heart of BA...mere blocks from the Obelisco and Avenida Corrientes, steps from a metro station, a half block to a Carrefour and rock tossing distance from the pedestrian street and a bevy of restaurant and shopping choices. I like being in the heart of a city so this was great for me.
So, in closing, the Gran Hotel Argentino is a decent "value for money" kind of destination...beautiful it ain't...and services are basic... but it's worth the pesos.

Great location to visit Buenos....
The hotel is basically on the main street of Buenos Aires-el 9 de Julio- and was in walking distance to many main attractions or the 'subte' station-easy and economical way to get around the city. [I would also recommend the 'bus turístico' for 490 pesos argentinos (Dec-2016) for a thorough view of the entire city-well worth the money. Although some of the rooms could use an update, my updated room was always clean (great maid-Vicki on the 7th floor) and adequately served my needs. The complimentary breakfast with my package was quite good. I had read that the wifi was 'hit & miss', but I found it worked well at all times-you had to re-login daily, but that was it. The front desk personnel was always friendly and Matías helped me to arrange several excursions. (I speak Spanish so that might have helped my overall experience.)

Very old rooms with bad smell
The rooms are very old, air conditioners not working, and bad cigarette smell everywhere.
Location is very good. Close to tourist spots and to subway stations.
Breakfast is average.
Staff is friendly.
