Holiday Not !

Hotel approach was impressive on arrival and greeted with a glass of cava - reception area lovely, rooms good, food good, all staff were very friendly BUT if you want a relaxing holiday then think again before you book this hotel. I booked this holiday for my son's 30th through TUI and was not advised that the average age was 75 ! Can you imagine on first day around the pool my daughter said it was like the film Cocoon ! We were a party of 8 and my mother jn law who is 82 (going on 18!) said she felt like we were visiting an OAP home ! On his actual birthday I asked if I could put a few balloons on the chairs at breakfast and although they said yes I felt ist was an inconvenience. I found all the extras a bit annoying as well as TUI not really informing me when I booked you have to pay 1 euro per day for a pool towel then there's the safe deposit box which is extra and also if you want a fridge oh and no tea and coffee facilities in the room even a premier inn has tea and coffee ! I have no disrespect for older people but my opinion changed when a resident was told to move her sunbed back to where it was there were few of the older residents giving the thumbs up to Sandra the sunbed police! So petty! The sun beds are all in a uniform line and if you are a sun worshipper you are not allowed to turn the beds around the opposite way even though they are still in a line. You cannot turn them to face the sun as then they would be out of line. We found out that this is because of wheelchair access - There is no sign on the website or around the pool stating this. If you're a smoker you cannot smoke on your balconies even though it's outside. Also this is not a child friendly hotel - when you take kids on holiday they like to jump in the pool splash around on lilos play ball this is also not allowed. There is no diving in the pool either. Far too regimental and I felt like I was back at school with all the silly rules. At meal times you have to show a card with your room number and it's frowned upon if you forget to take it. There was no atmosphere around the pool in the day. No background music anywhere just silence and some days feeling like you were on a building site as they are still building the roof top pool. We loved where the position of the hotel was as it's easy to walk to bars restaurants etc. Would I go back NEVER not even if I was 99 ! A holiday is somewhere to go to relax feel like you can please yourself but this hotel is the complete opposite. Far too many rules !

We have just returned from our 20th visit to the Vulcano. The hotel has had a complete refurbishment although not completely finished. The UP work is still being carried out and work was started some mornings at 7.30am. Most of the refurbishment that has been carried out is very well done but some of the finishing touches aren't very well done. The walk in shower much better than a bath.

nice refurb, but disappointing

Having just returned from a 2 week stay at the Hotel Vulcano, I feel I need to comment on my experiences. Firstly, I would commend the refurbishment styling, although some of the workmanship is a little poor, (paint splashes etc) Once, when the rooms were serviced, we were supplied with a bed sheet with a hole in it, and a towel with a large stain. I was also served spaghetti in a chipped bowl in La Pallapa. These are minor observations however. My main points are to do with the dining room, specifically at evening dinner. My impression is that the food standards have dropped since my previous visits. The quality of the food was still excellent, but the choices seemed restricted and repetitive. Some nights it seemed that unless you liked pork or fish, you had to have salad. Rabbit is not a 4-star menu item to me. I was also surprised to see cauliflower at breakfast. My biggest concern was the change in dress code policy. Shorts and sandals and tee-shirts are not the type of clothing I expect to be seeing at dinner but they are now allowed. As people always try to push the rules to the limit, I expect some will be going in to dinner straight from the swimming pool or beach very shortly. This is both unseemly and unhealthy. It was good to see that pool towels reserving beds in the morning were being removed. I would also like to praise all the staff, since they were always friendly and helpful. Having enjoyed many good holidays at the Vulcano I was hoping, following the refurbishment, that the hotel would be moving toward 5-star quality, unfortunately I think it has moved toward 3-star.

An amazing hotel

This was my second visit to the Vulcano this year although I have been several times prior to the refurb. The decor is so fresh and bright now in lovely shades of grey with white, so modern. The dining room is nice and airy and the food delicious. There are lots of meat choices though I tend to stick to salads and cheeses. The rooms are great and we hired the fridge but there is no kettle so we took our own.Love the walk in shower, felt so much safer. We had a pool view room so bath robes were provided and at long last there was an XL size robe which actually fit ! TV was flat screen but English channels were very limited. Evening entertainment was really good and the new layout in the concert room means you get a better view of the acts. The sports lounge seemed to get busy in an evening with around 5 tv's showing different sports. We did use the outdoor quiet seating area but it tended to get a little bit breezy. The new layout round the pool is much more pleasing and we both went in the heated pool and really enjoyed it. Just wish they wouldn't play the music so loud when it is the morning pool aerobics. We noticed that since the pool refurb there is no longer a clock and temperature gauge. It was nice to know how hot the day was getting before. Is this going to be replaced ? Now my one real gripe about the refurbishment. On previous years visits, in an evening, if my husband and I didnt want to go in the concert room we loved to sit in the jungle planted area. The sofas and chairs were comfortable and there were coffee tables with big lamps on which enabled us to sit in there and read our books and have a nice quiet drink. Now there are no table lamps, just little floor lights which are no good to read by. This area did not seem to be used as much in an evening as on previous visits as it was too dark .I did send the hotel an e-mail after my visit in March as my sister fell over in the dark. I was told that lamps were on order and waiting delivery but on my visit this month there were still no lamps.!! We love the hotel and have already booked to come back in October, so see you all then.

If you are under 70 avoid avoid avoid!! This hotel is full of old people who are not friendly at all it's very boring and regimental! Although the food was fab, the warm pool was lush, the rooms are beautiful and the location is central for everything it's just a shame that it's soley catered for the elderly!
