Nice small hotel

We were three nights. Breakfast was good. The room was clean. The bed was nice. The service was very friendly. The problem was that, our group passports were on the table. And who could have taken them!!!!!!! Usually, the tour leader takes them (under sign passports).Passports must be kept in a locked closet.

Hotel Cameo: an instruction ma....

Life in Cameo can be challenging at times, but worry not, this little review will explain how to get the most out of your stay here. This is my second stay in Cameo, that is a mid-size hotel located very well close to the central part of the city. It is not in a dead center of Saint Petersburg, which allows prices here to be somewhat more reasonable. The hotel features friendly staff and the room cleaning is impeccable. So, with few precautions, you will get a nice stay. When entering the room, find out if it is too hot. In my case, it was. Open the window and check out the heater beneath it. Dial it down to complete zero or slightly above. Via some trial and error, you should be able to get just enough heating. It could be just me, but pillows were not so comfortable and I had a slight sore in the neck. I replaced the actual pillow with the decorative ones that can be found on the bed too. Gets better. Now, very important tip. If you wake up in the night and can not get the idea, is it warm, cold, or both - you probably are experiencing the consequences of having a bathroom. Turns out that the ventilation in the bathroom - which is a shower only, but rather large - is actually quite bad. So all the steam will go into the room and you will get a strange humid 'atmosphere'. As ventilating the room during the cold weather is not what you like to do, I suggest to keep bathroom closed at all times when you are inside the room. It is insulated with rubber, so very well isolated from the room itself. The downside of this is that the bathroom gets VERY wet. So when you leave the room for the day, it is the best to leave the window open, if weather permits (you do not want it open in the severe cold to protect the heater) and open the bathroom door wide. As you may see in the picture attached, the condensate stays in the bathroom for about five hours, permitting the creepy inscriptions on the mirror that you might leave to entertain the next visitors. The survival kit for the hotel would be incomplete without a kettle and hairdryer borrowed from the reception. (There are grocery stores on Gorokhovaya street when you can get some tea leaves and cookies.) There is a default hairdryer in the bathroom, but it is somewhat of a joke. It is a very weak one and as stated above, after the shower, the bathroom gets humid like a rainforest. Staying there for drying hair would be not practical, as you might get sweaty again while trying desperately to dry your hair for the unduly long time. So get better drier from downstairs. They supply also the ironing kits. One last thing that the hotel should fix is the lighting quality. For some reason, in my room, a cold LED light bulbs are used on the ceiling. This would not be a major problem, but the worst thing is that the hotel is using really cheap and bad LEDs. They are flickering insanely. I have attached couple of measurements from a program that visualizes flickering on a smartphone and found out that the ceiling lamps are going 100% modulation. In plain language, they shut off an and on 60 times per second, going from complete dark to full power. Usually, the spectrum of cheap LEDs is quite bad and gives unnatural, "unhealthy", very unpleasant color, which seems to be the case. The tabletop lamp is at 50% flickering. The healthy limit for flickering is just 15% or less. Everything else abuses your eyes, makes you tired and can cause a headache. My strong suggestion for the hotel is to read reviews and purchase higher quality lighting bulbs. Once you have adjusted the temperature and remember to close the bathroom door, you should be getting a rather comfortable room. It is rather large, as opposed to cramped space you can find in some other places in the city. Some noise pollution can be heard thru the walls but since it was during day hours, and the hotel is generally quiet, was not an issue for me. I also am quite happy with the location. The subway station Pushkinskaya is an easy 10-15 minutes walk away, and along the road, you may encounter several round-the-clock grocery stores, and next to the subway station there are common fast food places that work till very late. The heart of the city, Nevsky prospect, is about 20-25 minutes away by foot.

Pretty good, would repeat the ....

Being Russian I chose hotels in my own country carefully. This one was a great find. The hotel is located some meters deep inside the complex yard of few buildings and while finding your way to the hotel after sunset you will have a glimpse of true city spirit - dark, huge and gothic. :) Though due to the location inside yard it is really quiet. It is located rather close to city center and for instance to walk to Nevsky might be more desirable than taking subway, if weather is favourable. So location is quite descent. We had kettle in the room and we were able to use ironing board. No frills with anything in the room, it is your typical hotel room with small table and a bed. A minor downside was the water in the shower that gets around entire bathroom. I think hotel staff should look into buying these water swabs that some hotels offer to collect such water. Another matter was air in the room that has to be ventilated by opening windows. Though I should say it happens in other hotels too. The hotel has central airconditioning but I was not able to test it due to late autumn time. There were episodes of noise from corridor but assuming that people spend most time in the rooms you won't hear much from them. Breakfast is descent - it is common buffet with a Russian hotel breakfast touch. The selection of breakfast offers is changing everyday. Wifi was working mostly ok, though I recall that it was not connecting at times. For stay in the city I do recommend to get local SIM with some internet, as it makes you much less dependent, it is very cheap in Russia. Small grocery stores working overnight can be found in the vicinity. If you want a snack in a local way, try Pirozhkovaya at Gorohovaya st 25 that we liked.

Very clean. convenient and com....

Kinda old building but very clean. Close to Fonstanky river, just 2-minute walk. Our hotel room had new bathroom fixtures. Facade being painted during our stay. Breakfast meal is considered good with ample choices. Not really a heavy eater anyway. So overall, a good place to stay in St Petersburg. Close to the Metro Station. Staff friendly and helpful.
