Anniversary Trip

After reading all the reviews l was a little apprehensive. So I will give you my good and not so good thoughts. First they over booked the hotel and they had to put us up in Atlantis for one night, (that place is way over rated!). Not a good start. Let's start with the good. The staff at the Riu is outstanding. Everyone we came in contact with treated us special. A couple shout outs- Agatha was our waitress for breakfast and lunch at the buffet. She made our week, that friendly smiling face everyday, having our table by the window made our week special. Lyndon at the night buffet was funny , and our wine glass was always full. The buffet food was very good. The not so good You have to wait in line for the specialty restaurants up to 45 minutes before they open (I don't like to wait whe on vacation) . We tried the Steak Resturant . I wanted the Steak and Lobster but could only chose one. This never happened at the other all inclusive that we have stay at. They need to take reservations . They have no gift shop, they have a great coffee shop but it opens after 10am. Overall it was a nice place. If they listened to the guests and make a few changes they can make it a great Hotel.

Good, but we expected great

Returned last night from our weeklong stay. Pros and Cons mixed in this review: - WiFi mostly good. Had 2 outages in a week. Largely a strong signal. - Food was good. Only ate at buffets but the selection and quality was mostly good. Service was courteous and friendly - Jackie and Christoph were excellent. - 24 hr room service but selection was very limited - Room was very good. We got a oceanfront room and the view couldn’t be beat. We asked to be as high up as possible but got the lowest possible room instead. Also asked to be away from the stairs and elevator. Elevator not a problem but the stairs were right next to the room, something that couldn’t be avoided. Floor was mostly quiet but the constant noise from other guests going in and out of their rooms and letting the doors slam at all hours of the day and night was annoying. - Room layout was excellent. Big screen tv that turns 360 so can either be watched from bed or from couch. Bathroom was top notch, minus continuous issues we had with the toilet running (flapper issue or chain came off -I had to mess with it half dozen times). Bed was firmer than most but fairly comfortable. Asked for additional pillows and were accommodated. AC worked fine, but the temp could not be changed. AC system ran a bit loud which kept my wife awake some evenings. - Balcony was excellent, stunning view of the beach and water - one of the best we’ve ever seen! Rather than go down to the sand as often, we stayed on the balcony a few times instead. ** BEWARE! ** Although the lanai was covered 90% of the time from the sun, the surroundings are white, which reflect the UV rays around you, caused us to get slight sunburn. - Three sets of curtains - sheer, daylight darkening and drapes kept the sun out mostly well inside the room, except at the head of the bed where they couldn’t be pulled back - Spa - decided to get a couples massage on our anniversary and it didn’t disappoint. One of the most relaxing ones I’ve had and the staff was very professional. Wife tried to also get her hair done for some color but they had a new person working there who didn’t have the right colors available and wasn’t very experienced at application - Gym - better than I expected. Good amount of cardio machines, one multi weights machine and a rack of dumbbells up to 50lbs. Room could get a bit crowded but was very manageable - Pool - largely enjoyable. Plenty of chairs and towels available. 2 pools, a main and an infinity pool with a swim up bar and party type of activities there. Music and DJ could be a bit overwhelmingly loud at times. Bathrooms poolside were being renovated, which meant you had to go back indoors to the main lobby and be covered in a shirt or towel (security was hit or miss on enforcing this). Jerk chicken food available there but only open a short time. Entire pool area was closed, even pool bar, at 6PM. - Front desk was very courteous, as was the workers down at the beach. - Beach - what I looked forward to the most became my my biggest disappointment. Chairs were available along with umbrellas, but only 1 umbrella per 2 chairs. The entire beach is PUBLIC accessed, which wasn’t explained to us in our booking. Therefore, many outsiders not staying at RIU came to squat there with us, making an already crowded beach much more so. Along with the outsiders were the sales persons constantly coming up to us throughout our time on the beach asking us to buy things or go jet skiing or parasailing. It was a constant nuisance. Police did occasionally patrol through but did very little actual policing - mostly spent their walks looking at their cell phones. One incident happened right in front of us. A seller was trying to sell drugs to other beachcombers nearby us. Then the same seller got into an argument with one of his fellow workers right in front of us and argued at the top of their lungs for 20 full minutes, nearly getting into a fight. I politely asked them to please move elsewhere and one of them was extremely rude and nasty at me and cursed at me and the fact that we were in the Bahamas, not the U.S. Then he came back later and mocked me once again saying the exact same thing, when I hadn’t said anything else to him. I told him if he was badmouthing me or the U.S., he surely didn’t seem to have any issue accepting U.S. money. Afterwards my wife and I never went back down to the beach, fearing that I likely would be antagonized into a fight, which I am certain he would’ve lost badly. - Transportation to the hotel was delayed, though I had already prepaid for it. They double booked too many persons so we were waiting a full 30 minutes on the curb. Then we were packed into the dirtiest cargo van imaginable and the driver took a detour to show some of the other loud party passengers the best place to get “Sky Juice”, to which they stopped to get some for everyone. Gladly, the return trip to the airport a week later was much better. Would I recommend this place? Sure, but just don't get your hopes up like we did in thinking it was as awesome as advertised. My overall rating shows as a '4 out of 5' but only because I couldn't give a '3.5' - a fair assessment to be just slightly above average, rather than 'average' or 'very good'. This place was 'Good, but we expected great'

Exclnt!! Hotel & service as we....

I am an apprentice travel agent sent to evaluate the new Riu Palace, Nassau. I don't know much about the pre-updating of the Riu Palace in Nassau. But I will tell you it was a 5 star hotel. The food, outstanding! From buffet to the Krystal restaurant. Skipped India as well as Japanese. The Steak House was to me a MIs- Steak House, not worth waiting in line. The Riu has to do something about guests standing in line for restaurants. Offer more restaurants or take reservations. One suggestion, nix the India retaurant. Waste of space. Rooms super clean as well as pool area & restaurants. Grt hotel & Atlantis casino 4min walk! I may be back next year to see if any changes have been implemented. Kathryn Coon

Currently sitting on my balcon....

So before staying here with my husband I read many reviews. And I have to agree with a bunch of them. There are definitely cons to this hotel, but for me the pros outweigh them. Here you go - Pros- 1 - Very very clean 2- Amazing staff 3- Very good food 4- Amazing, beautiful beach - the sand is the fluffiest most white I’ve seen. The water is so clear I’m up to my neck and still see my toes. Beach staff - they set up you chairs, umbrella and table as soon as you walk on the beach. Bring lots of $1’s. 5- The staff at the Riu is amazing and although it’s all inclusive they work for tips. 6- Very nice rooms - good size & clean 7- Bar in the room - we emptied a bottle of rum and it was replaced the next day. 8- Location - very close to Atlantis, they say next door but that’s a stretch. But very close. Food is really good! 9 - Beautiful hotel 10- Good cable tv 11 - The islanders selling things & services on our the beach are very polite and totally take no for an answer. Cons - 1 - Our view - It’s actually hard to put this is the con category because the view of the ocean in breathtaking. But you have to look on an angle to see it, or at least look to the right. We’re on the 14th floor poolside. So if we look down see the 2 pools. HOWEVER there is a hotel right next door and the also see the ugly roof. It’s bit of an eyesore but I just look at water and pretend it’s not there. 2 - The pools - again hard to put in cons but this is my 3rd Riu and the pools are small. Very small in comparison. But with the beach that here I don’t care about the pools. They also close the pool at 7pm. What was waste. I was just at the Hard Rock in Orlando and the pool was open till 10:30. The bar outside at the pool also closes at 7. So much wasted space at night. 3 - To me this it’s much of a big deal but the restaurants don’t take reservations. You have to get in line around 5:45 for a 6:30 searing. Or you won’t get in. On the upside the buffet is really good so far. I read lots of complaints about this. The RIU should listen to the consumer and change this! 4 - This doesn’t seem like a Riu palace and definitely not a resort. But it is an amazing hotel in the Bahamas. In the end their are some cons but the pros outweigh them 2 to 1. I have never felt that it was safe to bring my 18 year old daughter to the Caribbean, just the 2 of us, but I’m already planning on bringing her back. If you don’t mind more of a very upscale hotel and are willing to forego the resorty caribbeany feel I definitely recommend this hotel. Make sure you demand a room on the side NOT overlooking the pool, you’ll thank me!

Beautiful and lovely experienc....

First time visiting the bahamas and was very impressed! The beach is AMAZING! Sand soft white and the water so clear and warm was perfect. Chairs always available. Locals trying to get you to jet-ski was annoying on the best especially if you wanted to relax. There was so many of them and very competitive with eachother they alwaus argued. Was not nice to see on beach. The hotel was very very clean. Felt safe too with security around too. The lobby smelled always like sewage only in the lobby though. Buffet food was so delicious with big variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurants we never got a chance to try though because was first come first serve with no reservations so we never made it on time. The coffee bar was amazing. Tasted great and always quick. They has music playing with dj every night in the Calypso bar but he was terrible. Played not the greatest songs. I requested songs and he said couldn't play because not the weekend and finished playing before 1am because of people staying in rooms above. So not much to do at night except for walking to the atlantis casino. Nightclub only open on weekends too. The aquarium was beautiful at atlantis and really big. Free after 6pm. Staff really friendly at Riu. All very helpful and welcoming if approached. Pool bar was quick just closed at 7pm which we found early since sunsets later now. Would highly recommended the Riu and bahamas for a 4 day all inclusive. Was a great getaway for my husband and I.
