Budget hotel in Shanghai
The hotel rate is CNY359/night. It is not costly especially you are in Shanghai China. The front desk people cannot speak English and of course I have to use my body language to communicate with them. Room is small and a bit clean. Toilet is big enough but pls do not expect well-equipped items as this is not luxury hotel. In short, it is ok with the tariff and in the middle of cold winter, I am comfortable with a heater inside.

I stayed here for 6 weeks, it is located very near Jinshajiang road metro station and cross the road and you arrive at Global Harbour which is a shopping centre, so location is very good. Sometimes it was hard communicating with the staff as my mandarin isn't the best, and the staffs English was limited but they did always try their best and get us the help we needed. The security guards were always so cheerful and also helpful, the wifi was temperamental but the staff did help with correcting it.
The rooms are basic, you get what you pay for. They do have a washing machine on two of the floors, so that was always quite handy.

Excellent staff but poor facil....
If you end up staying at Jinjiang, don't expect much. I stayed there for five weeks straight and the best way I can explain the place is that it is has just enough to be called a hotel-no more no less. Even when you take into consideration that you are in the middle of Shanghai, there still seems to be a lot lacking in terms of housecleaning, overall maintenance, and availability of English staff (and by availability I mean there is no English staff). When we got back from another part of China to check into an available room, we had so much trouble getting the air to work that we ended up having to switch to another room altogether. That was after spending a night in the damp mosquitoe-infested air of course. I got to give it to them though, they at least to try to make your stay enjoyable. Even if the staff knows about the on-and-off room service and crappy Wi-Fi, they do everything in their power to make your life a little bit easier. Case in point, the morning I left to go back to the airport, one of the guys working at the front desk couldn't understand my English and limited Chinese but he certainly wasted no time pulling up a translation app on his phone. And even though there was no actual maintenance man, the security guard tried his hardest to pretend like he was one when our power kept going on and off. In a nutshell, if you have the option to stay somewhere else, do so-but if not, you're in good hands.

Avoid this hotel
This hotel was booked for me as part of a program with East China Normal University.
Upon check in, I learned no one at the front desk spoke English. We communicated with a translator on the computer. I was given a smoking room at first which looked out on to an interior patio. In addition to the smell of cigarettes, it was very dark and gloomy. Almost immediately, I went downstairs, and tried my best to request another room-non-smoking with an exterior window. I had to wait for the room to be cleaned even though it was after check in time. The new room did have an exterior window, but it also had mold growing in the bathroom, paint peeling off in the window and stains on the walls.
In addition, upon leaving the room, you must take your key from the switch that turns on the power and the air conditioner. Of course, coming back the room was always warm and humid.
Needless to say, this was extremely disappointing as the room was disgusting. Stay elsewhere if at all possible. Shanghai has wonderful hotels, but this is sure not one of them.

Good value & location/service ....
- Clean, good location, good value
- canteen next door is good
- relatively safe
- cleaning service: we came back after being gone for a whole day & the room was not cleaned. They got on it right away after we complained. Happened 2 out of 3 days.
- no safety deposit box
- staff is not very well trained. We had an issue with registration and we were told 3 times by 2 different people that we did not have a reservation. After I pushed again, the front desk finally went to back office and the lady back there confirmed our reservation. Why did the front desk staff not go back and ask instead of arguing with me during my first encounter with them? (I speak Chinese and had a hard time with them. What happen if you don't speak the language?)
Overall, if you are visiting the university, it is a good place to stay.
