Youth-hostel level is an insul....
First they couldn't find our reservation, so I think we got the spare family-bedroom... We booked through HamburgTourism and requested a room away form the streetside of the Hotel, because we have little children. We also send the hotel an email two days in advance. As we drove in, we noticed that there is a street on both sides of the hotel. If you're lucky, you get a room on the 'courtyard'. When we asked at the front desk if we could get suchs a room, the told us: it's full! As I asked about the email I send, they answered bitchy: do you know how many emails we get? We're not a 5star hotel you know...
The room is reasonable clean (don't look under the bed or try to look through the window), but loud, so loud our children couldn't fall a sleep the first hour they lay in their bunk-bed. It was also very hot, but you can't open the windows, because of the Traffic noise outside. There is no climate-control. After ± 23H it gets a little bit more quiet, so you can open a window.
If you value you're breakfast, you'd better get a breakfast elsewhere. The bread / brötchen is/are dry. The choice in fillings in reasonable, but the quality is lacking.
You hearabout this hotel as: it's youth-hostel level, but that is an insult to youth-hostels. They were already booked out as we booked two months in advance...

Hit and miss
Check in took about 1 hour. We queued for ages and the staff seemed overwhelmed. To be fair to them there were a lot of travelers checking in that couldnt speak German or English and had no manners.
The room we had was good. We had a room of two singe beds and bunk beds. It was a long walk from front door to our room as the place is massive. The room was clean and exactly what we needed/expected.
However, although we were on a high floor there was a trash compactor below our window in a curt yard that made noise all night - window couldn't be left open.
Don't even bother with the lifts as some don't work and others are slow and only hold 3 people. Be prepared to get a sweat on getting to your room.
There is space downstairs to play pool/watch tv, get a drink or some food (not great food). We skipped breakfast as it looked pretty poor. instead just got a bite to eat on the move.
Distance to city is not bad. 5 min walk to berliner tor train station then you can g anywhere you want. There is a Lidl near by (5min walk) if you do not wish to eat/drink or need supplies.
The area of the hostel is a bit of a dump but then it's cheap, what do you expect. Not a bad base from which to explore Hamburg if you are prepared to walk!

Comfortable sleep with a buffe....
Catch the subway to the Berlin Tor station, exit station, turn right, its one long block and then across the street. There is an indoor skateboard park with skateboard graphics across the street. Grocery and department store is at the corner of the block with fast food kiosks inside. Initially, the street area looked a little shabby and the large lobby was alive with short lines, bar patrons, families with children and sports teams, but don't be put off. Our 6th floor room was quiet and the windows opened for fresh air. Soap, shampoo and towels are good. A train runs nearby on an elevated track. British Daniel Murray at reception, gave us outstanding service. He gave us maps and highlighted transportation routes and gave us accurate advice. Upon registration, leave your passport at the desk in the safe and get directions to the correct elevator. If you want to print your boarding passes for flights, get the e mail desk address. Breakfast is in a large bright room in the basement with fresh flowers on each table: fruits, meats & cheese, cereals, yogurts, breads. juices, coffee & teas. Clear your own table and bus your own dishes.

good accomodation, but too noi....
We stayed for three nights in a&o hamburg. Last night was a disaster becuse some guys had a party in the room next to ours. I complained two times at reception, but seems they were reluctant to do something. I would like to get refund for one last night because it was no sleep at all.

Our rooms hadn't been cleaned ....
We checked in around 5 pm to our private room on the 8th floor. When we got there, dirty linens were still on all the best, the trash was full, and the surfaces were visibly dirty. We left our stuff and went down to reception and told them. The desk attendant said she would call housekeeping immediately. We went to dinner and when we got back around 8 we found our rooms were still dirty with the previous guest's stuff. We went back down and asked for it to be cleaned and a new attendant told us the cleaning staff had gone home hours ago. That was all we were told, we had to ask for clean linens to make the beds ourselves. We asked if we could get a discount or refund because this is not what we paid $100 for. She said no. No breakfast voucher, free drink at the bar or anything. We made our beds and discovered that we hadn't been given pillow cases so we went back down and asked for them. We were told there were none clean but we could come back at 22:00 to see if a new load of laundry had come in. Overall, very frustrating stay -- poor customer service and an experience that was not worth what we paid! Never have I ever had such a poor hostel experience, and I've stayed in over 15 hostels this year already.
