Things to Do in Matheran

  • Alexander Point

Enjoying a wonderful scenic location, Alexander Point lies on the Madhavji Road. Flanked by lush forests, this vantage point offers panoramic views of Palasdhari Lake, Garbut Point, Rambaug Point, Chowk Point and Borgaon Village. Carry your binoculars to have a clear view of the Bhivpuri Power House Towers. What adds to its fame is the breathtaking view of the deep valley from the cliff. You can also spend some time experiencing the cool breeze and serene environs of this place.

  • Ambarnath Temple

The ancient Ambarnath Temple lies on the bank of the Vadavan River. Believed to have been built by King Mahamandaleshwar in the mid 11th century, the shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has a striking resemblance to world-famous Dilwara Temples of Mount Abu in its subtle architectural designs that attract a number of art lovers. It is an excellent example of Vesara architecture - a blend of North Indian, Dravidian and South Indian Nagara styles of temple making.

Constructed in brownish stone, the shrine’s walls are heavily decorated with intricately designed sculptures. The beautiful images of Lord Shiva in different moods, including his renowned dancing pose, adorn the ceilings and pillars. These sculptures have fluted moldings around them.

To reach the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum), one has to descend 20 steps. Once you reach, you will find a Swayambhu (self-manifested) linga enshrined under the open sky. A statue of Nandi Bull is located at the centre of the main porch of the temple. Counted amongst the revered shrines of the region, this temple is visited by pilgrims from across the country, especially on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri.
