Things to Do in Matheran

  • Neral Matheran Toy Train

Neral Matheran Toy Train is a heritage train managed by the Central Railways. The foundation of this charming hill railway was laid by Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy in the beginning of the 20th century. This 2 feet narrow-gauge toy train connecting Neral and Matheran was opened for public in the year 1907. There are four pairs of train operating between the destinations usually. However during monsoon, just one pair operates on a daily basis.

Covering a distance of about 20 km, it travels up the mountain, from where tourists can enjoy fascinating views of dense forests and hills. For those who prefer some personal space, the train has a deluxe compartment that is well-equipped with modern facilities. Passengers can closely observe the outside scenic beauty while sitting in the compartment on the installed television."

  • Prabal Fort

Prabal Fort, perched atop the Prabal Hills, is located on the western side of Matheran. This magnificent fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji from the Mughals. Historians believe that there was a treasure hidden inside the fort at the time of its capture. The fort initially had two gateways and eleven towers. However in 1818, these gateways were destroyed in uncongenial fights. At present, one can see only four towers in the fort.

Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, this heritage site is a popular tourist attraction of the region. One can see this fort from various viewpoints of Matheran including Little Chowk Point and Louisa Point.
