Things to Do in Matheran

  • Ganesha Chaturthi

    Ganesha Chaturthi is a very popular festival in all of Maharashtra and is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in the region. Idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in the town and people also bring idols into their homes for worshipping.

    It is a nine-day festival usually held in August or September. It ends with the visarjan or immersion of the idols into the sea and a prayer for the lord to return the next year.

  • Paymaster Park

    Paymaster Park is a popular weekend getaway for locals as well as tourists. This historic park has statues of Lt. Col. Paymaster, Malet and S. L. Panday, who immensely contributed to this place. It is also adorned with a variety of flowers and trees and features benches for visitors to sit on. The park is an ideal place for a fun family picnic. How to Reach Matheran

By Air

The nearest airports to Matheran are in Mumbai (100 kilometres) and Pune (120 kilometres). You can hire a bus or taxi to Matheran from these airports. But since Matheran is a vehicle-free zone, all petrol and diesel vehicles are stopped 2.5 kilometres away from the city. You will have to cover this last stretch on a horseback, a rickshaw or if you’re fit enough, on foot.


By Train

The closest railhead to Matheran is in Neral (21 kilometres). You can get on the Deccan Express from Mumbai or the Sahyadri Express from Pune; both ply every day. From Neral you will have to go to Matheran by road, which is a 30-minute journey. Many local trains on the Mumbai-Karjat route also stop at Neral.

Another interesting but slow way to reach Matheran is to catch the Toy Train that departs from Neral. The journey takes about 2 hours but the ride is quite beautiful. During monsoons, the frequency of the trains reduces considerably so make sure to book well in advance.
