Things to Do in Hyderabad

  • St Joseph's Cathedral

St Joseph’s Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad is one of the most beautiful Roman Catholic churches in the city. Although the church was established in the year 1820, the construction of the cathedral's present structure began in 1869, by Father Antonio Tagliabue. After purchasing a plot in Gun Foundry area, formerly known as Chanderghat , Father Antonio Tagliabue decided to build a convent, church and school within the premises. The church was completed and opened for worshipers on Christmas Eve in 1875.

The structure and interiors of the cathedral are captivating, and the facade flaunts fine Italian architecture. Five mammoth bells, imported from Italy, are installed in the open bell tower of the building. These are not only sacred, but are believed to safeguard devotees against storm and thunder.

The central hall of the church is large enough to accommodate 500 worshipers at a time. The church also features an imitation of the acclaimed 'Pieta' by Michelangelo in the main alcove. One of the best examples of Italian craftsmanship in India, this site must not be missed by travellers visiting Hyderabad.

  • Begumpet Mosque

One of the most iconic structures in Hyderabad, the Begumpet Mosque boasts of an impressive facade and awe-inspiring interiors. More than 100 years old, this mosque is known by different names - Mosque of the Moors, Masjid Iqbal Ud Daula, Aiwan-E-Begumpet and Spanish Mosque.

Nawab Sir Iqbal-ud-Daula built this mosque after his return from Spain in the year 1906. This mosque with splendid Hispanic (Moorish) architecture resembles the Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba (Spain) and Jama Masjid Gulbarga (Karnataka, India).

The use of spires instead of usual domes and minarets gives this mosque a unique church-like appearance. Unlike other mosques, it features a pointed main roof with two curtailed pyramids placed one above the other and separated by octagonal domes.

Capable of accommodating up to 3000 people, this mosque features two rooms, a central corridor and a large prayer hall. Moorish arches and calligraphic Quranic verses inscribed on the walls adorn the interiors of the mosque. Declared as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this mosque is a place worth visiting.
