Things to Do in Hyderabad

  • Ugadi Festival

Also known as the Telugu New Year, this festival has a special significance in the entire state of Hyderabad. Celebrated in the month of March and April, people often indulge in preparations before the festival which includes cleaning and painting your house. Some people also beautify their house entrance with mango leaves.

  • Mecca Masjid

One of the iconic landmarks that attract both tourists and pilgrims from all over India is the Mecca Masjid. The name as well as the design of this holy site has been derived from the mosque in Mecca. Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah - the fifth ruler of Qutub Shahi dynasty, began the construction of the mosque in the early 16th century when Hyderabad was known as Golkonda. He laid the foundation stone of the mosque, but the construction was completed in 1694 by emperor Aurangzeb after the Mughals took over the city.

Visitors will be amazed to know that the soil used in making the bricks for the central arch of the mosque was brought from Mecca (the holiest place in Islam). The structure that stands today is an outcome of the sheer hard work of around 8,000 masons and labourers who worked painstakingly for days and nights until the final stone was laid.

The architecture of the mosque is exquisite. Believed to be the oldest in Hyderabad, and one of the largest in India, this mosque features 15 arches and a hall that can accommodate up to 10,000 worshipers. Thousands of monologues from the holy Quran are scripted on the arches. A symbol of unity and great religious importance, this is a serene place that exudes palpable spiritual energy.
