Things to Do in Rameswaram

  • Agnitheertham

Agnitheertham is a sacred water body, which lies just 100 metres away from the very famous Ramanathaswamy Temple. A legend from the Hindu Epic, Ramayana , explains the religious significance of this theertham.

It is believed that Lord Rama bathed here after killing Ravana (the demon king of Lanka), who abducted His consort, Goddess Sita. People believe that taking a holy dip in Agnitheertham will wash off all their sins.

  • Ramanathaswamy Temple

"Located towards the east of the island town of Rameswaram is the imposing Ramanathaswamy Temple, where pilgrims from different places come and offer their prayers. This shrine is listed among 12 revered Jyotirlinga Temples in India. Here, the Hindu deity Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga. Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, which have been glorified in songs of three Saivite Saints (Nayanars)– Appar, Tirugnana Sambandar and Sundarar.

One of the popular folklores from the Hindu epic Ramayana suggests that after killing Ravana, Lord Rama came to Rameswaram with Goddess Sita and worshipped Lord Shiva. Sri Hanuman – an ardent devotee of Lord Rama, went to Kailash Parvat and brought a lingam of Lord Shiva, which is presently installed in the sanctum of the temple. Another lingam found in the temple was built by Goddess Sita using sand.

Enclosed by a high compound wall (madil) on four sides and Gopurams on the eastern and western sides, this temple reflects typical South Indian temple architecture. Anuppu, Sethupathi, Sukravara, Nandi and Kalyana Mandapams are the temple halls within the complex. The temple's third corridor is the longest in the world and among its primary highlights. Junction on the west of this corridor and the paved way joining the western Gopuram to Setumadhava shrine together form a unique chessboard-like structure called Chokkattan Mandapam. Owing to the religious prominence of this temple, hordes of devotees come here to offer prayers and seek blessings."
