  • Jadayu Theertham

    Out of the 22 theerthams in Rameswaram, Jadayu Theertham is quite popular and holds immense religious significance. There is an interesting legend from the Hindu Epic - Ramayana associated with the origin of this temple.

    Jadayu (king of birds) fell at the temple site while fighting against Ravana (demon king) to save Lord Rama's consort, Goddess Sita. Later, a temple was constructed at the place where he fell and died. This temple, surrounded by sand dunes, also features a pond that is filled with water, which is sweet in taste.

  • Villoondi Theertham

    People coming to explore the ancient religious edifices of Rameswaram must not miss visit the sacred Villoondi Theertham. Its mention in the Hindu Epic - Ramayana adds immensely to its popularity.

    According to the Epic, Lord Rama dipped his bow into the seawater to quench Goddess Sita's thirst (His consort). For this reason, the place came to be known as Villoondi Theertham, where the word 'Villoondi' means 'buried bow'.

By Bus

A bus journey to Rameswaram is quite comfortable and safe. Daily bus services by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) have routes to nearby cities like Kanyakumari, Thiruvallur, Pondicherry, Trichy and Chennai. You can choose from a regular, semi-deluxe or a deluxe coach.


By Train
