Things to Do in Jammu

  • Surinsar Lake

    Located about 40 kilometres from the main town of Jammu, this lake has a mythological connection with the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that the legendary warrior Arjuna shot an arrow that pierced the Earth at one place and emerged from another. According to folklore, Surinsar Lake is the point from where the arrow came out, creating a serene water body.

    Although visitors are not allowed to swim or boat here, owing to its religious significance, the calming effect of the picturesque environs is nevertheless rewarding. Bird watching is an engaging activity that visitors will be delighted to indulge in. The enchanting flora and fauna around the lake are worth exploring, and memories of the same are sure to remain with visitors for years.

    During the summer season, visitors can find seemingly endless number of lotus flowers blooming on the surface of the lake. Besides, the area around the lake is lined with several restaurants and food joints.

  • Rani Charak Maha

    Rani Charak Mahal, situated inside the Mubarak Mandi Complex, is one of the exquisite buildings belonging to the Dogra era. This palace was constructed around 150 years ago, using red bricks and mortar. The royal ladies of the Dogra dynasty used to live here until 1925, when Maharaja Hari Singh moved the seat to Hari Niwas Palace on Manda Hills - located on the outskirts of Jammu city.

    The beautiful edifice is a part of a group of monuments that is collectively called the Mubarak Mandi Complex. Visitors can admire priceless antiques, palanquins, utensils and a throne made of gold, among other interesting things displayed at the Mahal. Situated adjacent to the Tawi River, the palace offers breathtaking views at the time of sunrise and sunset.

By Air

The Jammu airport in the city is the closest domestic airport that is well-connected to different cities like New Delhi, Srinagar and Leh. Popular air carriers like Spice Jet, Jet Airways and Air India have regular flights from the airport. The other two nearest domestic airports are in Srinagar and Leh. New Delhi is the closet international airport with daily flights to Jammu. The Delhi airport is connected with different cities in the world. Once you reach the airport, you can hire a taxi or a cab who will charge as per the distance covered.


By Bus

Many neighbouring cities like Manali, Shimla, Ludhiana and Delhi are well-connected with Jammu as many city and tourist buses are run by Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation. You can choose from a regular to a deluxe bus and the fare may vary depending upon the type of bus as well as the distance covered.


By Train

The nearest rail junction in Jammu is located within the city and is known as Jammu Tawi. This railhead is linked to most of the Indian cities like Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai and Trivandrum. Some of the popular trains that run to and from the railway station are Jammu Rajdhani, Uttar S Kranti, Jhelum Express, Andaman Express, Himgiri Express, Swarak Express and Himsagar Express. Some of the trains do not run daily so it is advisable to check the train schedule before booking it.
