Kumarakom - Kumarakom is a peninsula of green meadows and serene backwaters and finds a place on the itinerary of every tourist travelling to Kerala. A tiny village with a cluster of even tinier islands, Kumarakom adorns the enchanting Vembanad Lake with much grace and charm.A birdwatcher’s paradise, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a habitat for several migratory birds and is situated on the banks of the radiant Vembanad Lake. This sanctuary is covered in rich greenery and is home to birds such as the Siberian Crane, Egret, Heron, Water-Fowl, Ducks, Moorhens and Kingfishers.

History of Kerala

The Christians arrived from the Middle East in the 3rd century followed by the Muslims in the 8th century. The Jews who came in the early years of Christianity became traders and important part of Kerala’s history. During the many years that consisted of Feudalism, Kerala went into the conflict zone due to lack of strong, central leadership. This weakness was utilized by the Europeans who went on to explore and rule the rich land of spices and gold for two centuries. By the beginning of the 19th century, Malabar and Travancore in the north came under the British Madras Presidency. Almost after a decade of India’s independence, in 1956 modern Kerala emerged from Malabar.
