History of Mauritius:The Portuguese visited Mauritius at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1598, the Dutch settled in named it Mauritius after Prince Maurice of Massau before leaving the island in 1710. However, it was during the French Colonial rule from 1767 to 1810 that Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, emerged as an important centre of business, trade and naval operations. During this time, the British made several attempts to conquer Mauritius but were deflected by the French. On 1810, the British landed on the island with great armed forced and forced the French to surrender. The British rule heralded rapid social and economic changes and also passed the law of abolition of slavery in 1833 which brought in significant changes on the socio-economic picture of the country. The British continued to rule the island and gave up power in 1968 when Mauritius got independent.
Weather in Mauritius:
May to December: May marks the beginning of winter in Mauritius. During winters, the maximum temperature on the island is 24 degrees and the minimum temperature drops down to 18 degree Celsius. These months are considered as the best time to visit Mauritius, its beaches, nearby island, wildlife and is also a perfect season for sports enthusiast.
January to April: January marks the onset of summer in Mauritius leading the temperature to go up to 33 degree Celsius while the minimum stays at 25 degree Celsius. Make it a point to carry an umbrella along as rain showers are pretty frequent during this time.
Weekend Getaways from Mauritius:
Reunion: Most famous for its large variety of flora and fauna, coral reefs, rich marine life, deep canyons, mountains and ridges, the French island of Reunion is an amazing weekend getaway from Mauritius. It is located 200 km south-west of Mauritius. One of the most active volcanoes of the world, Piton de la Fournaise located here is a popular tourist attraction. Some other volcanoes that are no longer active draw travellers to this part of the world. The west coast of the island is a favourite with surfers.
Madagascar: The other landmass in the vicinity of Republic of Mauritius is Madagascar that can be reached in less than 2 hours by air from Plaine Magnien. It is located 48 km south-east of Port Louis. Famous as the centre of ecotourism, the island offers visitors a chance to see varied species of flora and fauna.
Nosy Tanikely: A marine reserve off the north-west coast of Madagascar, is also counted amongst the popular weekend getaways from Mauritius.
Nosy Mitsio and Nosy Radama are the main centres of scuba diving near Mauritius. Surfers find the south-west coast a heaven to indulge in this adventure sport.
