History of Mauritius:

The Portuguese visited Mauritius at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1598, the Dutch settled in named it Mauritius after Prince Maurice of Massau before leaving the island in 1710. During this time, the British made several attempts to conquer Mauritius but were deflected by the French. On 1810, the British landed on the island with great armed forced and forced the French to surrender. The British rule heralded rapid social and economic changes and also passed the law of abolition of slavery in 1833 which brought in significant changes on the socio-economic picture of the country. The British continued to rule the island and gave up power in 1968 when Mauritius got independent.
