Sir Edwin Lutyens designed the India Gate with the aim of creating a memorial to 74,187 soldiers of the Indian army who died between 1914 and 1921 during the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. It is officially named the "All India War Memorial," featuring 13,000 soldiers' names inscribed on its walls. The Amar Jawan Jyoti (an eternal flame) was added here in 1971 to commemorate the unknown soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for India.
