Things to Do in Lonavala And Khandala

  • Reversing Station

Reversing Station is a remote tourist place, situated in the picturesque hill station of Khandala. This deserted site was used as an office by the railway department in the past. At present, it serves as a popular leisure spot and viewpoint of the region.

This vantage point offers a perfect vista of the Duke's Nose, which is a high cliff and a famous trekking destination. Outside tunnel number 26 of this station, a large advertising board of Amrutanjan is present.

This spot, known as the Amrutanjan Point, is famous for the beautiful views of Khopoli - an industrial town - it offers.

  • Bhaja Caves

Bhaja Caves is the collective name given to a group of 22 rock-cut formations that are perched atop a hill near Lonavala. Most of these caves date back to the period between 3rd century BC and 2nd century AD, when the Hinayana sect of Buddhism was at its peak. The inscriptions found on pillars are testimony to antiquity of these caves and tell us that the caves served as significant religious centres of Buddhism in ancient times.

The most prominent structure amongst this group is the Chaityagrha – an open shrine with splendid wooden architecture. This hall has tall wooden pillars and a dome-shaped stupa, along with elaborately designed arches and patterns.

Another notable rock-cut formation is Cave 18, which is a monastery with a large hall.Depictions of the Sun God Surya and Lord Indra are present inside this cave. Its is also home to two beautifully adorned doorways.

In addition to these two notable caves, the site has several monasteries, halls and verandahs. A cemetery with 14 rock-cut stupas also forms an integral part of the Bhaja Caves.
