Things to Do in Daman

  • Nani Daman

"Nani Daman is a picturesque hamlet that brims with both natural and man-made attractions. Larger among the two towns (Nani Daman and Moti Daman) that together form the city of Daman, this place is speckled with residential colonies, health facilities, educational centres and shopping areas. The River Damanganga, which separates this town from Moti Daman, enhances its overall beauty.

From Gothic churches and Portuguese citadels to temples and lighthouses, there are many places of interest that can keep you busy in sightseeing for days. By far, the town's most popular attraction - St. Jerome Fort, which was named after the revered Father of Catholic churches, is worth exploring. The impressive architecture of this church, featuring three bastions, two gateways and a life-sized statue of St. Jerome, is bound to fascinate every onlooker. Located close to the fort, Our Lady of the Sea Church and the Lady of Remedios Church are also important landmarks that vie for attention.

When in Nani Daman, do not forget to pay a visit to the old lighthouse, from where you can behold breathtaking views of the setting sun. Serving as a popular vantage point, this lighthouse also offers stunning views of the Damanganga River, the bridge built over it and surrounding landscapes. Also worth visiting in Nani Daman is the old Jain Temple that features fine mural artworks and glass paintings from the 18th century."

  • Somnath Mahadev Temple

A popular place of religious importance, the Somnath Mahadev Temple is located in Dabhel village, Daman. There are many legends associated with the origin of the temple. According to one of them, a Shivalinga miraculously appeared at this spot after many prayers by a monk who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. The natives regarded this site as sacred and built a shrine of Lord Shiva in the year 1974. In the later years, renovations were done, and the temple was decorated with beautiful glasswork.

A number of celebrations are organised in this temple, which attract devotees from regions near and far. Most prominent among the festivals is the 'Gangaji Fair', which is celebrated once in a year with keen interest and energy. A huge Lokmela also takes place in the temple, during Mahashivratri – Lord Shiva's birth occasion. The temple witnesses a huge influx of devotees on Mondays, the auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva.
