Things to Do in Thiruvananthapuram

  • Agastya Mala

Approximately 60 kilometres away from Trivandrum city, Agastya Mala is a tall peak with a height of 1868 metres. It lies inside the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and is part of the biosphere reserve inside the sanctuary. There are many rivers and waterfalls close to this peak.

The mountain stands between the border of two Indian states- Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Apart from the varied flora and fauna, this place is also a popular area of worship for Hindus. As dated in the epic of Hindu Puranas, Agastya was one amongst the seven rishis (Saptrishi) and his idol is erected atop the peak.

For those who are looking for adventure in Trivandrum, this peak is good for trekking. Stretching for 25 kilometres, the trek is a little tiring and it might take a while to cover the distance. Make sure you take the trekking permit from Kerala Forest Department Office before venturing out for the trek.

  • Padmanabhapuram Palace

Approximately 55 kilometres away from the main city, the Padmanabhapuram Palace is located in Thucklai. A wooden palace built in the typical Travancore architecture, the palace is filled with rosewood carvings and sculpted décor. You must not miss the mahogany musical bow, Chinese art designed chairs and some rosewood and teak carved ceilings. The palace also has underground passages, dance halls, inner courtyards and a durbar hall. One of the most interesting aspects of the palace’s black floors is that it was made by mixing sand with egg white, lime juice, burnt coconut, charcoal and jaggery. While you are here, you can choose for a guided tour where apart from looking at the various artefacts, you can also hear the fables and legends associated with it.
