Things to Do in Shimla

  • Reserve Forest Sanctuary

Located 11 km away from Shimla, close to NH-22, the Reserve Forest Sanctuary is an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Sprawling in an expanse of 951 hectares, this reserve has varying altitudes that range from 1900 m to 2620 m.

From this sanctuary, you can behold breathtaking views of Deo Tibba, Chota Shali, Bandar Poonch, Rakta Dhar, Badrinath and Pir Panjal – some of the most majestic Himalayan Mountains. The reserve is connected to the Chail Sanctuary in the south through a forest corridor.

This wildlife refuge is populated by vivid flora and fauna. The Himalayan deodar, pine, oak, rhododendron, horse chestnut and maple are most widely found trees. Exotic plants like weeping willows and silver oak also dot the area. During the monsoon season, cobra plant, wild strawberries and other berries grow in abundance. The rich wildlife of this sanctuary includes animals like kakkar (barking deer), jackal, leopard, and birds like Himalayan eagle, chikor, partridge and pheasant.

With nine perennial streams, including Churat Nala and God Ki Nala flowing through this area, this catchment is a major water supply for Shimla. Chharabra, a small village in the confines of the sanctuary, serves as a summer retreat to the President of India and as summer residence to the Governor of Punjab. Owing to security reasons, tourists must seek prior permission to visit this place.

The sanctuary not only attracts people with its rich wildlife and vegetation, but also offers adventurous activities like trekking and mountaineering. The Reserve Forest Sanctuary is considered perfect for all – nature lovers, peace seekers, wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers. Do pay a visit!

  • Jubbal Palace

Lovers of history and architecture will love to visit the beautiful Jubbal Palace. It nestles approximately 7000 feet above the sea level, amidst rolling hills that are covered with dense forests of pine and cedar.

Located favourably on Raj Bhawan Road, this heritage site is just 5.8 km away from the heart of the city and is easily accessible. The presence of terraced gardens and deliberately trimmed Virginia vines within the complex greatly accentuates the exquisiteness of the palace.

Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chandra demolished the original Victorian structure in 1938. Later, on the same site a summer palace was built in a unique blend of Indian and Chinese architecture styles. The exteriors flaunt exquisite features like an elaborate citadel and walls with convoluted artistry. In the interiors, visitors will find intricately carved structures of timber, suspended attics and signed photographs and paintings of eminent people.

The royal family of Jubbal lived here until 1977 when Raj Kumar Uday Singh – Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chandra's grandson, converted a part of this palace into a heritage hotel. The hotel, named as Woodville Palace Hotel, is known to offer royal suites with luxury amenities.

History of Shimla

Shimla was established in the year 1817 as the British Summer Capital. The hill station was favoured by the British due to its cooler climate to the humid plains of India. The Victorian structures, glorious Georgian houses and churches which are scattered all over the town are the symbols of the British era.  In 1930, the Kalka- Shimla railway link was inaugurated and that quaint train still connects Kalka to Shimla.
