Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is located in the Southern part of India on the coast of Bay of Bengal. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, was a point of trading for the British East India Company. The name Madrasapatam was changed to madras when British had settled down with the local ruler Nayak. The south Indian culture is totally different from rest of India, it is exemplified through language, dance, sculpture and clothing. The food is unique where coconut, asafoetida and tamarind are must for almost call dishes. Sari for women and dhoti or lungi for men is the traditional attire. Bharatnatyam, a classical dance form, and Carnatic music, a India classical music, are the famous form of dance and music in India; Bharatnatyam being the National Dance of India.
Chennai has tropical climate and from the month of November to February is the best time to Chennai. During the month of December Pongal is celebrated, so one can visit and enjoy the celebration with different local delicacies. One can stay at Chennai Hotels and enjoy the festive season. As Chennai is located on the coast of Bay of Bengal there are lots of beaches to visit. Among them main ones are Marina beach – excellent for walks being the second largest urban beach in the world and others are Edward Elliot’s Beach, Breezy Beach and Covelong. Historical places are Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Thomas, St. Mary’s Church, and Thomas Mount Church, Big Mosque and temples are kapaleeswara temple, Karaneewarar Temple, Parthasarathy Temple and Sri Ramakrishna Temple. And there are also various parks such as Arinjar Anna Zoological park, Guindy National park and Guidy Snake Park.
