About Nasik history, legends give us information that Lord Rama, of Ramayan epic, had Nasik as his home during his 14 years of exile from Kingdom of Ayodhya, it is here Lord Lakshman did cut off the nose of Surpanaka, which was the reason the place is called Nasik, nose being termed Nasi in Sanskrit, Sita Gumpha caves here is the place where Ravan abducted Sita devi, and even in 150 BC Nasik happened to be a great market place, while it is the Peshwas who gave the name Nasik in the year 1818, however British caught hold of this place in the same year, then on Nasik saw good urban development activities, many incidents connected with freedom struggle have occurred in Nasik, while in 1955, the Government of India established their currency printing press in this destination.
