FESTIVALS & EVENTS
“Baap Ke Kandhe Chadh Ke Jahaan Bachche Dekhe Mele, Melon Mein Natkey Tamaashey, Kulfii Ke Chaat Ke Theley Kahin Milti Meethi Goli, Kahin Chooran Ki Hai Pudiyaa Bhole, Bhole Bachche Hain, Jaise Guddey Aur Gudiyaa”
These lines from the popular Bollywood film Veer Zara inevitably evoke an image of relentless cheering and laughter, ladies bargaining, shopkeepers calling out to passersby, kids running while their fathers chase them, friends meeting up and feasting on a plethora of mouthwatering snacks, extensive shopping, fun-filled activities, competitions and the list is endless. Phew! While some of us may have visited it during our childhood, many of us have only heard about an Indian mela or fair in exciting stories from enthusiastic parents and grandparents. The Surajkund Crafts Fair is one such event that guarantees the festivity, fun and frolic of an Indian mela.

Every year in February, artisans and craftsmen from all over the country come and set up stalls in Surajkund, Haryana. On display some of the country’s most unparalleled and exquisite talent showcasing everything from fine handloom to ayurvedic herbs and fragrances; pretty accessories to elegant furniture, spices and condiments to intricate statues and paintings. Undoubtedly, the event is a glimpse in to India’s rich culture and heritage. Come and explore India’s treasure trove of crafts like terracotta pottery, cane handicrafts, wooden sculptures and metal statues. One of my favourites is the pottery stall, where the joys of pottery can be experienced by paying a minimal fee. Make your own pots, get them baked and carry back home a personalised souvenir!

At the food court, colourful stalls offering traditional cuisines and tempting aromas are sure to tempt your palate. Indulge in a variety of cuisines; from tangy idli sambhar to the unbeatable pav bhaji, from syrupy golas to colourful candy floss, Gujarati theplas to Bengali maach; all this lip-smacking food is bound to bring out the foodie in you. If shopping is not really your cup of tea, just sit back and enjoy traditional kathakali, kalbelia and garba dances or shake a leg to the loud and boisterous bhangra beats. Theatre shows and Indian traditional music from different parts of the country can also be enjoyed at the Surajkund Crafts Mela.
After bidding farewell to the unusually bone-chilling winter, spring is just the perfect time to cherish and relish the rich flavours of India. There’s no better place to do it than at the Surajkund Crafts Mela, which will be held from 1st February to 15th February, this year . An event that can be enjoyed alone, with family and with friends, the Surajkund Mela makes for an excellent getaway. Hurry, plan your trip now with MakeMyTrip hotels, flights, buses and train services.
