The room was well worn with peeling wall paper and falling ceiling tiles above the closet and bathroon door. The hallways were also well worn. The noise from metal stairs in the stariwells were loud until 10:00-11:00 pm with people going up and down. On Sunday morning a fire alarm went off in the hotel. The announcement accompanying the alarm was given only once and only in French. Having just been awakened from my sleep and being an Anglophone, I had no idea what was going on. I waited to hear the message repeated but it did not happen. The alarm then stopped and no further announcements were made. Once outside my room, I learned from other guests that there was a fire alarm and that we had to evacuate the building. Halfway down the stairwell other guests were returning stating that it was a false alarm ... but there was no official announcement stating that it was safe to return to our rooms. Once in the lobby, front desk clerks informed me that it was a false alarm. While I stood there waiting for the elefvators to start working, I noticed that there were no firemen present and that it was only hotel staff who were giving the "all clear" (usually it is Firemen who are the only ones authorized to give the all clear after an institutional fire alarm has been sounded... I guess it is different in Montreal, Quebec than in my home town of Ottawa, Ontario). In the end, there was no announcement over the intercom to state that it was safe to return to our rooms. Nonetheless, there was one last announcement to staff over the intercom asking them to return to their stations. The food in the restaurant was good but the prices for wine were outrageous (about four times the retail store price).

We were upgraded to the best room for only an extra $15/night. Was worth every penny; even got to use the log-burning fireplace. Right in the heart of beautiful old Montreal. Our room was not clean or restocked to our satisfaction and that is why the lower rating on service. Otherwise, we experienced friendly, helpful staff.

On our first night, we pulled in to the small outdoor parking lot expecting to find some sort of signage regarding hotel guest parking; there was nothing visible. I went up to the man in the booth and it turned out parking was not included in the price of the hotel even though it was listed under "facilities" under the website we booked through. It cost us $15 per night. We went to check in and the clerk at the front desk went over the reservation, which I pre-paid for online. Even though I booked a room with two queen beds in a standard hotel room I was told we would be staying in one of the condo rooms with one king bed and a sofa bed. Me being the shy person I am did not question it and just continued on to the room. When we arrived there was a very musty smell on the entire 6th floor. We entered the room and, which was very large with no warmth or decoration. When we pulled out the sofa bed we found a hand rolled cigar, which looked like it was left there from the previous guests. We didn't really care since they brought us new bed sheets immediately and apologized. In retrospect it would have been nice to have been offered something from the hotel. The sofa bed was basically a bunch of springs with a cover. I can usually sleep anywhere but the bed was ridiculous; I should have slept on the floor. The King bed was okay. The room was very clean but could use a lot of updating. The hotel is listed as a four star but I would say more like a two. Considering the price we paid, it wasn't worth it.

The location of the hotel was perfect. Very friendly staff and the restaurant Boso was excellent. I've stayed at the Indigo Hotel and they have hardwood in the rooms. The InterContinental is part of that hotel group, so I thought where it is listed as an eco-friendly hotel it would be the same. I would recommend this hotel.

Overrated property. I have stayed at much nicer and much cheaper hotels, just in the next block, who BTW also give complimentry breakfast, much bigger rooms with wi-fi. Maybe I got a very tiny room, because we reserved through a discount site, which I dont really care if I have to crash for the night. Although I have nothing negative to say about this place, but I would much prefer to stay elsewhere next time. This place is no value for money.
