Tiruchirapalli Airport History:
Tiruchirapalli Airport was developed by the British during the Second World War. This is a customs airport which is meant to serve Tiruchirapalli and the districts adjoining it in the state of Tamil Nadu. It was used by the British Air force at the time of world war and was later opened for civil operations. It was during the early eighties that passenger traffic actually began in the airport. It is believed that the airport was used as a racecourse in early thirties and forties.  The first airmail took off in 1936 for Colombo via Hyderabad, Madras and Trichinopoly. Air Lanka began its operations in 1980s with a frequency of a weekly flight to Colombo. The frequency later increased to 14 flights per week. Indian Airlines started their operations from the airport in mid 1980s to Chennai and Middle Eastern countries. In the month of April, in 2012, the Indira ATS Automation system got installed in order to assist the Air Traffic Control in enhancing the safety and security of the airport.

Tiruchirapalli Airport Terminals:

Terminal 1 - Integrated International Terminal: This terminal is used to cater to the international as well as domestic air traffic. This terminal was inaugurated in February 2009 and began its operations in the month of June the same year. This terminal can handle nearly 400 passengers at a particular time.  The airport has 12 check-ins, 4 customs and 16 immigration counters in its premises.

Terminal 2 - International Cargo complex: The older terminal out of the existing 2 terminals became operational as the cargo complex in November 2011. This terminal is the only mode that ensures foreign export from the state of Tamil Nadu.
