SURPRISE ME!
The Northern Territory is home to some of the most incredible habitats in Australia (and arguably the world), including World Heritage-listed sites, numerous national parks, conservation reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. There are boundless opportunities to observe and experience the unique plants and animals of the Territory in their natural environment.
If you are planning a trip to the Northern Territory, pack your bags and expect to experience unique wildlife destinations like no other.
Explore the Wildlife with a Cultural Experience at Kakadu National Park
One of the biggest national parks in Australia and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kakadu National Park is everything you would not want to miss on your NT wildlife tour. With about 80% of its land surrounded by lowlands and woodlands and its diversity of flora and fauna, the park is also home to over 5,000 rock art sites that keep its essence tethered to Australia’s ancient cultural values.
Comely white-bellied sea eagle, stately blue-winged kookaburras, charming wallaroos – put your binoculars to job and spot different types of birds (including migratory birds) and mammals. You can also take the Yellow Water Billabong ride and see aquatic creatures. Note that Kakadu National Park has six dramatic seasons, so plan your trip accordingly.
Unwind Yourself with Waterfalls and Waterholes at Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park, named after the explorer Fredrick Henry Litchfield, treasures experiences that stay with you for a good time. The park is just a short 60-minute drive away from Darwin and makes for a perfect day trip for nature and wildlife explorers. Cool off on warm summer days with the fascinating waterfalls and swimming holes (yes, we are talking about Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, and more!) of Litchfield.
The park is filled with woodland flora, offering you the sight of the overflowing vibrance of plants and settings of orchids, and other flowery species. Walk all the way to Tolmer Falls to see the rare orange bats with leaf-shaped nose and other exciting animals and wildlife. When exploring the park, do not miss out on towering magnetic termite mounds the park is proudly home to.
Watch Nature Take Over the Red Centre at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is yet another UNESCO World Heritage listed national park in Australia’s Northern Territory where you may want to photograph towering red cliffs and choose to be. Uluru is a massive sandstone monolith that adds drama to the plain, sandy backdrop of the Red Centre. Often regarded as Ayers Rock, this site attracts culture vultures, animal lovers, adventurers, the romantics and the novices to the national park.
As profound as it gets, the park celebrates rocky charms and fauna. Be on the lookout for Kangaroos, Black-footed Rock Wallabies, Blue-tongue Lizards and a world of other animals and wildlife that call the Northern Territory home.
Discover the Secrets of Watarrka National Park
Watarrka National Park is nature and wildlife at breathtakingly best. While a good amount of Watarrka’s popularity surfaces from the effortless grandeur of the Kings Canyon, you will also not want to skip what the park has to offer. The park was named Watarrka by the Aboriginal people - Luritja and Arrente, and the rock carvings and art inside are a no-miss dive into Australia’s oldest living culture.
One of the spectacular views at Watarrka includes the George Hill Range that, when mingled with sunset hues, make heaven of a shot for your camera. These ranges and rockholes are what the flora and fauna of the park call their home. Walk as much of it as you can to experience the range of fauna including, desert tree frogs, long-nosed dragons, diamond doves and more. Walk amidst the elegant arrangement of park’s flora, which includes species like Holly Grevillea, Striped Mint Bush and Butterfly Bush.
