HOTEL IDEAS
Imagine a holiday that’s all about exploring a tiger-filled forest, while living in an exquisite place that combines luxury with a dollop of rural chic. A holiday at Taj Mahua Kothi in Bandhavgarh is that, along with liberal servings of adventure, tiger safaris and hearty meals thrown in to make your stay exciting and comfortable.

Named after the Mahua or butter tree, Taj Mahua Kothi is spread over 40 acres and is right next door to the national park, which just takes 20-minutes to reach from the safari lodge. The 12 charming guest suites, or ‘kutiya’ (village hut) here are accessed via private courtyards with traditional mud floors. The interiors of the cottages are crafted in typical Indian style with wooden shutters, mud-coloured walls, open rafters and pottery roof tiles, and decorated with richly-coloured textiles. Little baskets stocked with yoga amenities and traditional games of marbles and Chaupad pop up like surprises around the room, for guests to discover and enjoy. For a more traditional feel, guests even get to begin their mornings with a hot cuppa poured straight from a kettle right off the chullah, and then have the chance to explore the grounds on the bicycles parked exclusively for them in the courtyard.
Unhurried mornings begin with sumptuous ‘Baghiya’ breakfasts featuring Indian delicacies, laid out on a bullock cart in the backyard. Light and nourishing lunches of soups, salads, rolls and pastas can be savoured by the swimming pool, next to the watering hole. And evenings are all about sitting out in the open terrace and enjoying cocktails, thali dinners and customary ‘khud’ dishes followed by delicious desserts.

While here, enjoy your sojourns into the Bandhavgarh National Park, which is nestled among the Satpura and Vindhya ranges. It offers a scenic landscape featuring woodlands, rocky hills, flat grasslands and tropical forests. One of the most beautiful forests in India with the highest density of tigers, Bandhavgarh is also known for its rich fauna. When you’re out on a safari here, you’re sure to spot animals like bears, Sambar deer, langur monkeys, wild dogs, leopards and wild boars. And if you’re lucky, you might see the King of the Jungle, prowling around the forest.
Be sure to enjoy a mahua martini under the mahua tree on a starlit night, or sit around a bon fire, savouring exotic cocktails and kebabs fresh from the tandoor. Also do sit out on the terrace, gazing at the star-studded night sky with a hukkah. A walk around the terrain with a naturalist to spot exotic varieties of flowers, insects and animals is another way to relish your experience at Mahua Kothi.
Some of the major airports here are located not too far from the Taj Mahua Kothi—Jabalpur is 165 km and Khajuraho is 260 km.
