It’s 2017 and small towns in India have been making quite a splash in Bollywood of late. From Bareilly ki Barfi to Ranchi Diaries, our movie makers are leaving no stone unturned in celebrating the colourful spirit and culture of the “real India” (and aren’t we glad!). If you love travelling to the heart of India, here are three movies from 2017 that you absolutely must watch!

Bareilly ki Barfi

This one’s a quirky love story that explores the mindset of a small town family living in a modern world. The girl’s need for acceptance and freedom in a marriage clashes with her parents’ middle class, traditional upbringing, where they want her to get married because she is of marriageable age. The movie introduces us to a refreshing way of life in this small town of Uttar Pradesh, which likes to live life at its own pace.

Ranchi Diaries

Who said small town girls don’t have big city dreams? This is exactly what Ranchi Diaries portrays through its characters. The protagonist is a girl from the small town of Ranchi, now capital of Jharkhand, who dreams of being the next big pop sensation, just like Shakira—her idol. The circumstances she has to deal with, the mentality of the people, the chaos and the drama that only a small, humble town like Ranchi can add to the plot, make this story a refreshing one.

P.S: Ranchi is also famously known as the hometown of MS Dhoni.

This movie once again talks about the big-city dreams of a small town man. In the hopes of being a singer, the protagonist is falsely accused of a murder in Muradabad, and finds himself in Lucknow Central. The movie shows the dealings and way of life in the small towns of India, contrasted with the pull of power and money. Those with big city dreams are shunned as outcasts in the otherwise laid-back society, and this movie captures the struggle of all those trying to make it big.
