Bordered by towering mountain ranges, Spiti is a desert mountain valley located in northern Himachal Pradesh. Given its high altitude, Spiti is a popular destination for adventure activities like biking, high altitude trekking and even skiing! Close proximity to Tibet means that Spiti has a strong Buddhist influence, evident by the large number of gompas (Buddhist temples) in the region. The place is an important centre of Buddhism in India and is frequently visited by the Dalai Lama. Other places of interest here include the Chandratal Lake–which is situated on a glacial bowl, and the Pin Valley National Park–a great place to spot the elusive Snow Leopard and the Tibetan Gazelle.
