A love for horses and horse racing is a British legacy that has been embraced by the affluent in India.  After all, what could be more glamorous than donning a beautiful dress, wearing a fancy hat and watching these magnificent beasts race to the finish line. One of the premier events on the racing calendar is the Calcutta St. Leger that is held at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) in the Maidan area of the city.

The RCTC is an institution in Indian racing, with a huge stand, an old library with all the classics and even a snooker room. It has all the hallmarks of a distinguished club and if you are lucky enough to get an invite, it is well worth a visit. This year, the Calcutta St. Leger will be held on March 16, and it’s an incredible event to attend at this prestigious racing club.

Relax in Luxury

The nearest hotel to the venue is the grand Taj Bengal, famed for its opulence and luxury. Those on a more modest budget could try Hotel Victerrace International, which is also conveniently located near the track, and has comfortable and quiet rooms. Both are approximately an hour from the airport and only twenty minutes from Howrah railway station.

There is plenty of history to explore while in Kolkata, one of India’s largest cities. Start the journey with a visit to the Indian Museum.  Founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society, this is one of the oldest multi-purpose museums in Asia. The museum not only houses artefacts but plays a key role in preserving culture and disseminating knowledge about the heritage of this region – a fascinating place to spend an afternoon.

Hit the Town

Park Street, now known as Mother Teresa Sarani, is Kolkata’s premier entertainment and dining district. So after a day on the track, why not take your winnings out on the town. For traditional Bengali cuisine, try Kasturi with its casual dining ambience and plenty of great food with classic Bengali tastes. For something more up-market, head to Veda. Beautifully decorated by Rohit Bal, this North Indian restaurant is a feast for all the senses and not just the taste buds. It seeks to tantalise diners with classic tastes, whilst enjoying the luxurious surroundings.

After dinner, to really feel like royalty, finish off the evening with a nightcap at Tantra at the Park Hotel.  This club has one of the liveliest experiences that can be found in Kolkata. Celebrate with champagne, or feel regal with a cigar and some fine cognac. Dance away to the tunes from some of India’s finest DJs before calling it a night.
