FESTIVALS & EVENTS
When I think fashion, I imagine classic Parisian styles, daring new trends in London and ostentatious designs of New York. Montreal is not a place that is synonymous with fashion but that is all changing with the Montreal Fashion Week putting Canada on every Fashionistas tourist map. From February 4 to 7, the who’s who of the industry will flock to Montreal in a style invasion.
The Centre of Attention
Whilst the fashion week is usually the domain of designers, buyers and glossy magazines, aspiring trendsetters can also join in this Canadian Festival by attending the catwalk shows and oohing and aahhing like a pro at the 2013 Fall Winter collections. This is more than just a show; it is a celebration of fashion, with exhibitions, artistic performances and films that portray the glitz and glamour that we have come to expect from the international fashion world.
A relatively small fashion festival, Montreal Fashion Festival focuses on niche-handpicked designers, with only 30 expected to make the cut. This attention to quality makes it feel like a celebration of fashion, with designers having a level of creative freedom not seen at some of the better-known world fashion events. Some of the carefully selected designers include Melissa Nepton, Harricana, Ralph Leroy, Nisse and Voyou.

A Walk Back in TimeThe sophistication doesn’t just start with Fashion Week, with Montreal being known as one of the most stylish places to amble. Take Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal), which still retains its old world charm, with cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages meandering past the Basilique Notre-Dame, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Paris in the 1800’s.
Cultural FeastHome to a host of cultural events, there is no shortage of reasons to visit Montreal. The largest jazz festival in the world, the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal brings the city alive each year with the sound of brass and cool tunes. The rhythm soon changes to the sound of laughter as the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival takes over this vibrant Canadian town, attracting some of the world’s most prestigious comedians. For Francophiles, there is Les FrancoFolies de Montreal. This unique French festival celebrates the most romantic language in the world, and the energy and arts that it attracts.
A visit to Montreal lets you be part of this vivacious and energetic French-speaking city. So if you fancy yourself as a connoisseur of avant-garde fashion, have a fine appreciation for that old world Parisian feel and want to be right in the centre of a world class fashion festival, then head to Montreal Fashion Week.
