FESTIVALS & EVENTS
There’s something celebratory about bidding adieu to the year gone by. Which is probably why December usually has the best, most outrageous (and sometimes downright ridiculous) festivals to offer.
This is also the time when you have plenty of reasons to travel. From Christmas in an exotic destination to a New Year’s party that is amazing by all accounts – December does pack quite the punch when it comes to celebration. India, of course, has its own touch to add. Around the country, festivals and events spring up, intent on displaying their repository of culture and heritage to visitors.
So, let’s have a look at the festivals in December 2017 that you shouldn’t be missing out on.
The Winter Festival takes place in the tranquil setting of Mt. Abu, Rajasthan. The festival is so popular that it is held every year around the last week of December. A three-day festival celebrating all the colour and regalia of the Rajasthani culture, the Winter Festival hosts traditional arts, crafts, and dance performances for its visitors. From an opening ceremony consisting of a procession towards Nakki Lake to a grand finale which includes a spectacular fireworks display, this is one of the most popular festivals in December. Visitors to the Winter Festival are likely to come across music concerts, traditional fairs showcasing the many handicrafts and rituals of Rajasthan, and of course, dance performances.
When: 29th to 30th December 2017.
Where: Mt. Abu, Rajasthan
Sometimes called as India’s answer to Tomorrowland, the Sunburn Festival is held each year in the party destination of India, Goa. Featuring a roster of some of the most renowned DJs and music artistes from around the world, the Sunburn Festival is a great way to bring in the New Year. Partygoers in India and abroad tend to block their calendars for Sunburn, which is one of the trendiest festivals in December. The three-day event features an arsenal of heavy-hitting numbers for EDM lovers. Vagator Beach is the most happening place in the country around this time.
When: 28th to 31st December 2017.
Where: Pune
How about partying like a maharaja? Book your ticket to Rajasthan mid-December and you’ll be treated to a three-day party that is perhaps one of the most versatile festivals in December. Held in the majestic Alsisar Mahal, Magnetic Fields has quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most hip events around the country. Featuring musical concerts, rock shows, yoga workshops, art installations, and treasure hunts – Magnetic Fields Festival is rightly named, for you’ll be rooted to the spot here. The incredible range of things to do here will be complemented by the nighttime ambience, when tents are put up for you to camp beneath the stars while the party goes until the wee hours of dawn.
When: 15th to 17th December 2017
Where: Alsisar Mahal, Shekhawati, Rajasthan
If you’re looking for a taste of something unique in India’s oft-unexplored hinterland, trace your steps towards Nagaland, where the Hornbill Festival awaits. Rightly called the “festival of festivals”, the Hornbill Festival is a tribute to Naga heritage and culture. Featuring an extravaganza of ceremonial processions, art displays, traditional dance performances, musical nights, parades, sports and much else, the Hornbill Festival is a great way to get acquainted with Nagaland’s rich traditions. Later, sink your teeth into delicious (not to mention exotic!) Naga cuisine to make for a memorable experience in Northeast India.
When: 1st to 10th December 2017.
Where: Kohima, Nagaland
This is one marathon of a festival, which means your dates can be pretty packed.
Welcome to the Rann Utsav, which is perhaps Gujarat’s most popular festival. Held amidst the unique terrain of the Rann of Kutch, the Rann Utsav is a celebration of all the good things in life. From folk dances and arts, excursions, handicrafts to adventure activities, handicraft and food stalls, and of course, music performances – Rann Utsav showcases the splendour of Kutch culture and how. The white desert looks absolutely surreal during a full moon night, so try booking your visit on such a night.
When: 1st November 2017 to 20th Feb 2018.
Where: Great Rann of Kutch, Dhordo, Gujarat
As you can see, when it comes to festivals in December in India, there’s much for the taking. So, you have plenty of excuses to travel. Plan your holidays accordingly.
