Dune Bashing and Stargazing—My ‘Dream Come True’ Vacation in Jaisalmer

Vast stretches of desert, camels trotting against the setting sun, locals decked up in colourful traditional finery—Jaisalmer was a treat to the eyes when my wife and I vacationed there last winter. While each moment spent in the beautiful Thar desert was spectacular, and the sights and smells are still fresh in my mind, one experience stands out in particular—that of dune bashing. A tailor-made experience

I thirst for adventure wherever I travel, but I had never expected to find it on a vacation such as this. It was my first time, and quite naturally, I was a little nervous. We headed out in a 4X4 SUV into the deserts of Sam village, which is famous for its undulating golden sand dunes. It was evening and the desert looked quite otherworldly under the reddish rays of the setting sun. And then, suddenly, our vehicle picked up speed and we were literally gliding over the sea of sand, ascending and descending over the hillocks. The thrill and adventure it offered far exceeded my expectations.

The highlights were many

We drove around in the desert for about an hour, enjoying the roller-coaster ride, at the same time, sparing moments to take in the beautiful sights of the desert surrounding us from all sides. We stopped at a few spots to take pictures because the backdrop was just too tempting to resist. I couldn’t wait to share the pictures with family and friends as soon as we got back to the hotel. We returned from the ride with our hearts thudding hard in our chests, only to find a hearty dinner laid out on a table especially for us. It was just what we needed after that hair-raising adventure!

Thoroughly satisfied with the food, we thought we were done for the day. Just then—much to our delight—our guide led us to a spot where mattresses were neatly laid out under the cover of the sky. Words cannot capture the experience of gazing at the heavily star-studded skies of the desert. Constellations sparkled above us as we spent some relaxing moments together as a couple—something we don’t get to do very often in our daily routines—chatting and reminiscing our fun-packed day.
