There’s just so much that one takes back home from a good Bollywood movie. For the next few hours/days and sometimes even years, the characters, dialogues and the story keeps coming back to our mind. The more imaginative of us even picture ourselves in their shoes, travelling to the places they virtually made us see and believe.

Let’s take a look at 5 such epic movies, which have stayed with us over the years.

Sholay (1975)

“Arre-O-Sambha! Kitne aadmi the?” Yes, I am talking about the ever-green film Sholay. The movie which you may not have watched but know the impact it has had on Indian cinema, the actors and the audience. Picturing Gabbar standing in the mountains, shaking his belt? Take a Sholay weekend trip to Ramanagaram, a village in the southern state of Karnataka, to spot the shooting locations and take some fun selfies. Make sure you visit the beautiful temples of Chennakesava, Amba Vilas, and Vijayanagar on your trip to Karnataka.

Mene Pyaar Kiya (1989)

“Dosti ka ek usool hai, madam: no sorry and no thank you!” Salman Khan captured the fancy of millions of people when he played the lead in his very first film Mene Pyaar Kiya with this dialogue. This beautiful love story was shot in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. With gems like Ooty Lake, Botanical Garden of Ooty, Rose Park, Pykara Lake and Mukurthi National Park, Ooty should be top of your mind for your next weekend getaway.

Rang De Basanti (2006)

“Koi bhi desh perfect nahi hota, use behtar banana padta hai” This dialogue is true in every sense and no other actor in B-town could have said it better than Mr. Perfectionist (Amir Khan) himself, in Rang De Basanti. This power-packed political drama was shot in the city of Delhi. Take a tour of Delhi (if you haven’t till now) and experience ‘unity in diversity’ come alive. Don’t miss food from Chandni Chowk, the ambience at India Gate, the peaceful atmosphere of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and the historic elegance of Qutub Minar, when you visit dill walo ki Delhi!

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

“Agar woh mujhse pyaar karti hai, toh paltegi!” I couldn’t possibly forget this iconic ‘palat’ dialogue from DDLJ while making this list. You probably have heard it a dozen times, but I’ll still mention that some portions of this film were shot in Switzerland and the rest in Punjab. Two very popular tourist destinations! How about planning a weekend getaway to either of these places and capturing some DDLJ moments? Run through the yellow mustard fields of Punjab or click pictures of the beautiful lake at Interlaken, Switzerland. And yes, don’t forget to bring the classic cow’s bell as a souvenir from your Swiss trip.

Deewar (1975)

“Aaj khush toh bahut hoge tum” This extremely popular dub-smash dialogue of Big B fighting and blaming God for his situation is from the movie Deewar. The film was shot in Mumbai, a place where Bollywood resides! From the solemn Haji Ali mosque, the numerous temples & churches, the Gateway of India, to the beaches and national parks, this place gives you every reason to pack your bags for a weekend getaway to the ‘sapno ki nagari’- Mumbai!
