Remember ‘Inside Out’? Remember how Riley coped up with all of her 5 emotions? Oftentimes, travelling makes us feel likewise. Travelling to places can also bring upon some serious emotional shifts.

Bichitrapur in Odisha is one of the hidden gems in our country. The name itself translates to ‘a land of wonder’, and you can take my word for it, it is indeed no less than a phenomenal spectacle! And, while I travelled to Bichitrapur, several varying emotions came flooding within me.

Anxiety: Feeling of Unease for an Uncertain Outcome

anxiety

On paper, Bichitrapur is an offbeat destination portraying quietude under the sun. I had pictured it already, vicariously, courtesy the images doing rounds on the socials. But as the hours passed, the sea was not really around. In fact, it was a road to nowhere, through the countryside. And I very much doubted that it would be anywhere near my imagination. I could only wait and wonder about the odds being in my favour. Fingers crossed, we somehow reached the kiosk, and I pinned on my hopes and waited.

Joy: Feeling of Great Pleasure and Happiness

joy

Once done at the kiosk, we were off to a jetty wherefrom we were to be boated down to the islands. Essentially a backwater mangrove, Subarnarekha River meanders through a bunch of canals and creeks. Slapping the waters of Subarnarekha, our boat made way past the mangrove. So long my anxieties got traded for joy. The lushness all around and the reflecting waters filled me up with a nonchalant satisfaction. I kept my eyes peeled at the line of trees along the horizon as we moved towards it. Howbeit, the boat left us off on a docking point, way sooner.

Awe: Feeling of Reverential Respect Mixed with Wonder

awe

Hopping out of the boat onto a usual landscape did not daunt me this time. Come what may, I was already in the moment, and relishing it. If you are the photographer in the group, chances are, you see everything through your camera. And I was no exception. The first sight of the breathtaking view was through the viewfinder, alas! Keeping aside the device, I awed at the stretch of land before me. The hinterlands. The never-ending beyond. A triad of sand, dead trunks, and water. Nothing dares to breach the peace here. The splendour is not just out-worldly, it is where serenity perennially incarnates.

The water was exactly as blue as it could be! Paced in slow motion, tiny ripples glided on to the sand. Here is where the sea reigns supreme. In its sheer purity, the place leaves you nothing but awestruck.

Disgust: Feeling of Revulsion or Strong Disapproval Aroused by Something Unpleasant or Offensive

disgust

This was momentary though. It goes without saying, any littering in this part of the world is beyond pale. Being a little more empathetic and responsible towards nature would only add to the ethereal otherworldly visions. If otherwise, places such as this are better off the tourists’ map. Period.

Sad: Feeling Unhappy

on-edge

As goes the proverb, time and tide wait for none! And it was time for the tide to flow in and take over the mudflats. I could hardly detract myself, as the sea glided in to cover up the swamps in entirety. For a few hours, I escaped into a parallel universe and shoving back to the normal, headlong,  seemingly felt sad and subdued.

Bichitrapur, Odisha is a backwater mangrove sanctuary on the eastern coastline of India. Here, when the tide retreats, sandy mudflats  of mangroves bare out, commanding a more endearing sight. A must-visit for the people who adore nature and specifically the sea.
