FOOD & SHOPPING
Malaysians love fashion and they know how to wear it. This is one thing I have always noticed when visiting this South East Asian country - the women walking down the street take pride in how they look and are always impeccably dressed. While I don’t have the sophistication of a local, I love shopping for anything and everything in Kuala Lumpur because it makes me feel like my style quotient has gone up just a little.
Slip into Something Comfortable
The first stop on any shopping trip in Kuala Lumpur has to be Bukit Bintang, the premier shopping centre in town. Clustered along Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail Roads are hundreds of shops, cafes and restaurants. This isn’t just the shopping district of Kuala Lumpur, but also the heart of its nightlife and dining district. Nestled in Bukit Bintang are several large malls, including one of the biggest shopping malls in the world, Berjaya Times Square. With 12 floors of retail therapy, you can find anything to suit your style and budget here.
To get some more bang for your buck, head to Jalan Petaling, the heart of Chinatown and the busiest bazaar in town. With a bit of careful rummaging, you can pick up some great bargains from this street market in Malaysia. To style up your home, head to the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory, which houses some decorative homeware. With classic and modern designs, you can find the perfect pewter dish to display in your home.
Put on those Strappy Sandals
No fashionista can think of missing the Malaysia International Shoe Festival. To be held from April 5-7, this is a brazen celebration of shoes, from stilettos to pumps and everything in between. With over 150 brands exhibiting their goods, you can learn how your favourite pair of shoes is made and of course shop!
Last year Jimmy Choo designed a special ‘Year of the Dragon’ couture collection. The Wedding Shoe Wonderland had everything you could possibly need to match your bridal outfit to and for those with a wild streak, there was the Rainforest Shoe House.
After you’ve got yourself a new wardrobe, it is time to put those tired feet up and perhaps get a relaxing pedicure. There are hundreds of spas in Kuala Lumpur, but the Pamper Floor at Starhill Gallery is certainly one of the best. Take your pick from the different day spas offering a range of sessions including traditional Indian therapies as well as the latest methods.
So if your wardrobe needs a revamp, or you just want some good old retail therapy, head to Kuala Lumpur and shop till you drop!
