Photos of Snowfall in Kashmir

It's snowing in the valley of Kashmir. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and other areas are facing record snowfalls and cold. Srinagar for instance recorded 18 inches (1.5 feet) of snow, which went as high as 4 feet in some areas. While the city life has come to a halt for some, others - including tourists - are enjoying the cold and snow. Last year on my Kashmir trip, I made a friend. This morning, he stepped out of his house in Srinagar and clicked these simple images (from his mobile) for me to see what I'm missing. Thought I'd share the nostalgia…

I wish he'd clicked more, but he tells me his umbrella was already heavy with snow so he had to retreat.

With this recent snowfall in Kashmir, heaven just got heavenlier. The locals and tourists however have some clear problems with the snow. An avalanche warning has been issued by the government, asking people to not head to steep mountains. In various rescue operations in the valley, the Army and police have evacuated over 50 locals from their their snow-covered houses.

Beautiful as it may seem from Delhi, I wish safety and warmth to all those there, including my friend Showkat.
