As a major gateway to some of the most unique destinations in Northern India, Manali is often ignored by hardcore travellers and adventure enthusiasts who take to the mountain passes. However, you will not find a more versatile holiday spot for solo travellers, groups of friends, and families alike. Honeymooners and adventure seekers, too, will rank it amongst their preferred destinations and with good reason.
Here are six epic places to visit in Manali. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.
Situated along the Keylong-Leh Highway, Rohtang Pass offers 3979 metres of scintillating sights, replete with icy glaciers, waterfalls, craggy peaks, and a host of adventure activities including skiing, snow scooter, and mountain biking. Rohtang Pass doubles as an access point towards Lahaul, Spiti, and Leh – so you’ll find plenty of adventurers revving up their Enfields to go above and beyond. The pass closes during the winter months, so anytime between May and October is when you should be planning your visit. A tip: be absolutely sure you can drive to the pass – it includes a number of slippery turns and narrow curves.
Located about 13 km from Manali, Solang Valley is an expanse of snowy slopes between Beas Kund and Solang Village. Hosting some of the finest ski institutes in the country, Solang Valley turns into a veritable skiing paradise during the winter months. Skiing enthusiasts should ensure they visit this destination between December and February to make the most of the seasonal sport. Summer in Solang Valley typically means adventure sports such as parachuting, paragliding, horse riding, and zorbing. One of the choicest places to visit in Manali, Solang Valley ensures fun all year round.

The rustic village of Vashisht, famous for its hot water springs, is located merely 3 km from Manali. Known for its water springs and temples, Vashisht is a choice base for foreigners and backpackers. One of the major tourist attractions here is a pyramidal stone temple built in homage to the sage Vashisht. The springs are known for their medicinal properties and come with a Turkish-style hamam bath. Try going for a bath early in the morning to avoid the usual rush and give yourself a nice little contrast to the Manali weather.
Nestled along the left bank of River Beas, the quaint little village of Naggar makes for an excellent walking destination if you’re staying in Manali. Get a glimpse into the local life and bask in the crisp Manali weather while trekking towards some of the landmarks in the village which include Naggar Castle, Gauri Shankar Temple, Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery, and the beautiful Tripura Sundri Temple. You can also take a relaxed stroll along the banks of the River Naggar.

Renowned for its scenic beauty, Parvati holds several attractions up its sleeve for the solo traveller, group of friends, or even families on a pilgrimage. One of the most popular places to visit in Manali, Parvati Valley is best toured by visiting the unique village of Malana, the Israeli hotspot Kasol, the trekker’s paradise in Kheerganga, religious destination Manikaran, and the waterfall at Rudra Nag. Definitely take a dip in the sulphurous hot water springs of Kheerganga- a therapeutic experience, especially after a long trek.
Perhaps among the most frequented places to visit in Manali, the Hadimba Temple is almost a rite of passage for any visitor to the region. Located amidst leafy environs bustling with towering deodar trees, the temple is also called the Dhoongri Temple and is dedicated to the wife of Bhima, one of the five Pandava brothers. It has a distinctive four-tiered pagoda roof and a large doorway inscribed with religious symbols. The temple is largely a tribute to Bhima’s family, including his son Ghatotkacha, and comes to life during May, when the annual Hadimba Festival brings together all the colourful culture of the area in sparkling three-day festivities.
Escape the madness of city life and head to the mountains to enjoy the lovely Manali weather and visit some (or all!) of these fascinating destinations.
