We’re all familiar with the phrase ‘’Malaysia, truly Asia (aaaa)’’, but have you ever wondered what really makes Malaysia truly Asia? This south-east Asian country is multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi lingual. Most definitely a ‘kaleidoscope of culture and heritage’! Chinese, Indian, Arabic; the influences are many in terms of culture and a trip to Malaysia will definitely bear testimony to it. So here’s a glimpse of Malaysia, a place much like a typical Bollywood movie, one that has a little bit of everything…
Central Market, Kuala Lumpur
Located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Foch Avenue) and the pedestrian-only section of Jalan Hang Kasturi (Rodger Street), the central Market is a heritage site and a landmark of Malaysian culture and heritage. Called the ‘’Pasar Budaya’’, this building is used as a wet market (an Asian fresh food market) for city residents. The main building (Annexe Central Market) is a hub of art galleries, theaters and music performances, craft displays and stores – both local and international!
#must see –The single and double storied buildings here that bear resemblance to the kampong style of housing, ones representing the many ethnic groups living in Kuala Lumpur.
China Town
Chinese Culture has been a substantial influence on Malaysia. Visit Petaling Street, a Chinatown, for some great buys on t-shirts and DVDs! If shopping isn’t your thing, opt for some local food instead of McDonalds (it’s the first shop). Treat yourself to Hainanese chicken and rice, ikan Baker (barbecued fish) and some curry and noodles.
#must see – When done with Chinatown, visit the Jamek Mosque - an old mosque of Moorish architecture. A famous landmark, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur, is located along the road.It is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and richest Hindu temples, receiving many devotees.
Little India
With the majority being Indian residents, Brickfield is aptly termed as ‘’Little India’’! A centre where Indian art and craft and business are showcased and encouraged, Little India proves to be the hub of all things Indian - from spice shops, grocery outlets, sweet and snacks shops, textile stores to restaurants and even flower stalls!
#must see – Tagged as the divine location, temples such as Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple, the Arulmigu Sree Veera Hanuman Temple, and the Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar Temple are all here. They represent the Indian influence on Malaysian architecture and religion.
Heritage Trails and UNESCO sites
Immerse yourself in the local culture with the heritage trails! With different trails like Ipoh, Dutch and Melaka one can really explore! Travel around historic Melaka, a UNESCO site, and discover the Melaka sultanate palace, Christ church, the statue of St Francis Xavier and the Stadthuys. Discover the cultural remains from the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Metal ages, in the lush green valleys of Lenggong! Open air and cave sites show the signs of early technology with its displays of tools and workshops!
