Some places stay with you long after your visit, and the Top End is definitely one of them. From Darwin’s oceanfront charm to Litchfield’s refreshing plunge pools and the ancient stillness of Katherine Gorge—this is where Australia opens up in all its raw, untamed beauty! It’s a journey best done unhurried, so make sure to give yourself 5 to 7 days to soak in the magic at every stop.

Here’s what’s in store for you when you visit:

Darwin: Where Sunsets Meet the Sea

Your journey kicks off in Darwin, the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory, perched on the Timor Sea. While Darwin itself deserves some exploring (think street markets, coastal sunsets, and waterfront dining), it’s also the perfect base to head into the Northern Territory’s natural wonders. Spend an evening on a Darwin Sunset Dinner Cruise, enjoy a fiery sunset from the deck while savouring a delicious meal.

Litchfield National Park: Home to Mighty Cascades

About a 90-minute drive from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is a land of waterfalls, swimming holes, and unique landscapes. A great way to take in its vastness is by setting up camp in Litchfield. This will offer you easy access to everything, from sunrise hikes, waterfalls, hiking trails to late-night stargazing.

Visit the Florence Falls, where twin cascades tumble into a deep, refreshing pool and go for a swim or simply admire the view. Set up a picnic by the Wangi Falls, spot frilled-neck lizards darting around the edges and walk across natural rock pools surrounded by bushland at Buley Rockhole.

That’s not all. Nature gets wonderfully weird here. Spot termite mounds that tower up to four metres high and align north to south to minimise sun exposure. Some have been around for a century even! Do not miss visiting the the Batchelor Butterfly Farm—a subtropical rainforest home to stunning Australian butterflies and caterpillars.

Katherine and Nitmiluk Gorge—the Final Stretch

Head further south and you’ll reach Katherine, a laid-back town that serves as the gateway to the jaw-dropping Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Just a 30-minute drive from Katherine, this park is a dreamscape of sandstone cliffs, tranquil pools, and tropical bushland. Go on refreshing hikes, spot hidden swim holes, say yes to serene sunset cruises or helicopter rides and more. Love water sports? Rent a canoe and peaceful drift along the towering cliffs amidst the ancient, awe-inspiring landscape.
