SURPRISE ME!
You’ve waited a long time for this. Taking off on a holiday with your closest girlfriends. The flights are done. The hotels are booked. The itinerary is decided. It’s all about women power and you’re all looking forward to adventures that await you! Before you head out, here’s a safety checklist to remember when globetrotting with your gang of women travellers.

Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Common sense will see you through most situations in a foreign country. If you’re in a situation where you’re unsure about what to do, ask yourself if you’ve seen local women do it. For example, if you’re in Thailand and attempting to enter a Buddhist temple in shorts…look around…you’re unlikely to see anyone else doing it because it’s considered disrespectful. There you go, let your common sense dictate.

If you’re travelling in a large group, you may want to do things that the rest of the women may not want to. If that’s the case, make sure you take a buddy with you instead of venturing out solo. There’s truth to the phrase “safety in numbers” so follow that rule and have a friend accompany you when breaking away from the jingbang!

Another instinct that rarely fails is your gut or inner voice. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. If you have a bad feeling about a situation, avoid it at all costs. This could be anything from getting in to a taxi or going with strangers to distant places. If you don’t think it’s safe to do it in your home country, it probably isn’t safe to do when you’re on holiday either!

There are an increasingly large number of hotels across the world that offer women-only floors. When travelling, it’s a good idea to stay at a place that offers them. If you’re choosing to stay at a smaller B&B or homestay, make sure that they’re in a safe neighborhood. Also, read the reviews of previous guests to evaluate the safety and security of the place.

When travelling, be aware of your surroundings at all times. When using public transport, keep an eye on your personal belongs. Avoid things like listening to loud music with earphones or falling asleep. If taking a taxi, map it on your phone so you’re not led wayward by your driver in an attempt to make a few extra bucks.
All of these are little things you can do towards staying safe on your fun-filled girlie holiday!
