That today Malaysia is one of the most sought-after travel destinations this side of the tropics will not really come as a surprise to anyone who has been following our blogs. What we’re keen to tell you now is why this Asian country is among the most exotic and outstanding countries in this region. Apart from its fascinating culture, the versatility of its cuisine and the enduring charm of its pristine beaches, Malaysia also offers a host of exciting activities for the curious and enterprising tourist. From snorkeling, scuba diving and wreck diving, to strenuous yet delightful treks in its dense rainforests, and a host of water sports including jet skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides - there are just so many things to make your trip a truly adventurous one.

Here’s taking a look at all the things that should be on your to do list when you head to Malaysia.

Wreck Diving

What and Why: Although Malaysia is not as popular a diving destination as neighbouring Thailand, peninsular Malaysia and Borneo do have their lure. These places are particularly popular because they bring you close to not just an astounding variety of marine life, but also the wrecks of many sunken ships from the World War II era. This is a side of history and adventure that any discerning diver or adventure seeker would not like to miss.

Malaysia is home to vivid marine life

Where: Among the best places to head to are the Perhentian Islands where lie the remains of a cargo ship as well as an American landing ship; Tioman Island also offers four ‘recreational wrecks’ and a Japanese ship sunk by British soldiers lies submerged in the waters of Malaysian Borneo. There are several other wrecks which are far more complicated to navigate and require more technique and skills and are probably not for amateurs.

Deep Sea Diving

What and Why: This is for marine life enthusiasts and those who look forward to exploring the fascinating and colourful world underwater.Scuba divingdiving is the best way to explore the hidden treasures in the rich waters of Malaysia. While snorkeling has its advantages, it is not half as exciting or stimulating as diving. Accompanied by PADI instructors, potential divers can explore a whole new way of life, underwater.

Where: Probably the best place is Sipadan, which claims to be the world’s best dive site. A protected area, you will need permission to be here and the time is limited (only between 8 am to 3 pm). Other acclaimed sites in Malaysia include Lankayan in eastern Sabah, Mataking, Pom and Sibuan islands and Redang Island within the Terengganu Marine Park, near the city of Kuala Terengganu in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Explorations and Treks

What and Why: Perhaps one of the best ways of getting the feel of a place is by exploring it on foot. By doing so you are not only in close physical proximity to its people but also witnessing firsthand the many wonders that will remain hidden to others who zip past a place in an automobile. Treks (whether amateur or more rigorous) are also an exceptional way to study and explore the flora and fauna of a region rich in bio-diversity.

Where: Fortunately, Malaysia never disappoints nature lovers. Whether in sea or on land, there is always enough to explore. One of the best places for treks and exploration is the Malaysian hill station known as Cameron Highlands. The area is full of must see places which include Gunung Brinchang, Mossy Forest, Parit Waterfalls, Butterfly Farm, and Robinson Waterfall. The Boh Tea Centre and Sg Palas Plantation is a great place if you like tea estate tours.

Sarawk, on the island of Borneo is yet another must visit for all nature lovers. Known as the Land of the Hornbills, it offers all natural attractions from beaches to forests. The Bako National Park, Belanum where visitors can stay on real floating houses and ogle at an astounding 664 species of birds, which call the region their own, are among some of its major attractions.

Close Calls with Nature

What and Why: Any visit to a tropical country is incomplete without an encounter with its teeming forests, wildlife and other natural bounties. Malaysia is particularly endowed with such natural gifts, making it the favoured destination for many nature lovers. While its cities such as Kuala Lumpur and its many, many gorgeous beaches call to the traveler in you; you will also find yourself being drawn to the call of the wild at various different places as you tour Malaysia.

Where: One of the most intriguing destinations is Taman Negara, said to be one of the world’s oldest jungles and one of the best preserved rainforests in the world. A national park and protected area today, it offers a host of different activities for visitors. Enjoy treks through the jungle, canopy walks on bridges suspended high up in the forests, fishing, nature trails, and boating to discover over 300 species of birds and some of the oldest animals on earth including tigers, leopards, sun bears, barking deer, elephants and tapirs.

Another very interesting, relatively deserted and acclaimed as one of the world’s most beautiful islands is Tioman, in peninsular Malaysia. Far away from any commercial tourist activity and covered in dense forests, it offers amazing opportunities for visitors. You can visit its local village Juara and also relax on its beach, scuba dive or explore the Mersing Marine Park within which Tioman is located.
