Food is a very serious business in Corsica, France. It’s the heart and soul of the island. There are no ‘on the go’ meals and be it lunch or dinner, it’s always a leisurely affair comprising at least three courses. Being on the coast, Corsica is known for its seafood. Freshly caught crayfish, oysters, prawns and trout can be found on most restaurant menus. Cured meats like smoked ham are also a favourite along with other meat dishes like wild boar casserole, veal with olives and Corsican lamb, all of which are usually slow-cooked and garnished with fresh herbs. Corsica is also wine country and while here, sample some local selections that make a perfect accompaniment to any meal.

Nicknamed the ‘island of beauty’, Corsica, France abounds in history as much as it does in its picturesque scenery. The French Emperor Napoléon was born in 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica’s capital city. Dotted along the town are historic statues and sites like the Bonaparte House, which was Napoléon’s family home and now a national museum as well as Musée Fesch, which houses famous works of art. Corsica also has a prominent prehistoric site in the area of Filitosa where 16 large standing stones with carved human faces dating back thousands of years stand tall.
