SURPRISE ME!
Bangkok is one of the world’s great cities, a throbbing metropolis with a diverse range of culture, shopping and great food. I have been to this great city several times, but never get bored of it. Like other major cities in the world, London, Paris, New York, there is so much to do that it’s hard to know where to start. Planning a trip to Bangkok, but you have only one day? here are my suggestions of what to do in Bangkok.
Centuries of History
No trip to Bangkok is complete without visiting the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This stunning complex was built in 1782 and it was the home of Thai royalty for over 150 years. With intricate craftsmanship and sparkling gold, it is the heart of Bangkok. A part of the same complex, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha was built to celebrate what was thought to be an emerald Buddha statue. Though the statue has been discovered to be jade, it is still a magnificent work of art, at over 700 years old. The Buddha is lovingly taken care of, with its robes carefully changed every season to reflect the change in weather. The temple itself is a sight to behold, so serene and peaceful amidst the chaos of Bangkok. While the palace is no longer home to the Thai Royal family, it still hosts many auspicious events and ceremonies.
The Taste of Thailand
No trip to Bangkok is complete without trying some hot and spicy Thai food. One of the most traditional Thai delicacies, and my personal favourite, is Pad Thai. Spicy noodles stir fried with crunchy peanuts, bean shoots, fresh vegetables and some shrimp (if you like that) are always a treat! Thai food is cooked with fresh herbs that just bring out the flavour even more. Try some Pad Thai from a street vendor and watch as they cook them up in front of your eyes.
Take to the Streets
Chinatown in Bangkok is at Ko Ratankosin and retains much of its original character. You can’t miss the entrance to this famous region, with the striking Chinese Gates, behind which lie a web of alleyways and lanes that demonstrate the best of Chinese heritage. Once known for its opium dens and pawnshops, this shopping district of Bangkok is now all about beautiful fabrics and gold. Take a break from the shopping to visit the famous Thai Temple of the Golden Buddha.
Bangkok also hosts many interesting international fairs and festivals including the Great India Education Fair, which is a must attend event for anyone involved or interested in the field of education. Still confused on what to do in Bangkok? head to this trade show that allows interested students to learn about the educational opportunities available in India over the course of the two-day event to be held on February 2nd to 3rd in Bangkok.
Finish off your day in Bangkok seeing the spectacular city skyline from a boat on the Chao Praya River and enjoying some delicious Thai dlicacies. Many dinner cruises are available, as you watch the temples lining the river shimmer and the bright lights of the skyscrapers glisten under the stars. Bangkok comes alive at night and this is by far the best way to see it.
So, even if you only have a day, you can still see much that this vibrant city in Asia has to offer.
