Overview

Kuttanad, also known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala, is situated in the backwaters of Alappuzha district. The area is covered with green paddy fields and rivers Pampa, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala. The Alappuzha – Changanassery road passing through Kuttanad ,offers a scenic view of the place. Farming is the major occupation in Kuttanad and rice is the staple crop. The canals are surrounded by coconut trees swaying to the beats of the breeze.

What To Expect?

Witness darter birds flying around and parrots hovering around the rice fields. Visit the R Block Island, a man-made island protected with dykes all around. Experience the traditional country lifestyle of Kuttanad and go water-cruising on houseboats on the backwaters. Toddy, the local alcoholic beverage is quite popular among tourists . Don’t forget to try appams, idli and dosa here.

Tips

  • The nearest railway station to Kuttanad is Alappuzha and Changanacherry.
  • Book the houseboat in advance as it is really difficult to book during peak season and the rates are much higher.
  • Summers in Kuttanad are hot and humid. The climate is not favorable for boat-rides and sightseeing.
  • Visit Kuttanad between October to March since it is filled with lush greenery, scenic surroundings and favorable weather during this time.
